middle of dinner!“
„Your gracious hospitality is overwhelming me,“ he murmured dryly.
„I only dispense gracious hospitality to those who know how to be gracious themselves!“
„Selena, please open the door,“ he said with deliberate patience. „I must talk to you. What I have to say
    concerns you deeply.“
    „I’ll bet. Say it, then.“
„Damn it! I’m not going to stand here talking through this door. If you’re so frightened of me, come on
out into the safety of the hall. Or we can go down to the pool and sit in the full view of your neighbors!“
„I am not frightened of you and you know it!“ she snapped, goaded into unlocking the door and
confronting him with an expression of supreme irritation.
He ignored the look, slipping into the room before she quite realized it. With a frustrated exclamation,
Selena closed the door behind him, leaning back against it with both hands behind her on the knob as she
    eyed him suspiciously.
„Good Lord!“ he growled, taking in the room before him. „Who the hell did your decorating?“
„I did. Sorry if it doesn’t meet with your approval!“
„I didn’t say that,“ he placated, moving toward a curious construction of bronze and wood that stood on
a glass end table. „It just takes a little getting used to….“
She watched him as he touched the sculpture with a surprisingly sensitive hand. York was wearing a
charcoal gray suit, and the overall effect of his midnight black hair, dark clothing, and intrinsic aura of
danger made for a savage contrast to the nearly all-white apartment.
There was a reason for the plush white carpet, white walls, low, white leather furniture, and glass tables.
The place had been specifically designed to form a backdrop for the amazing assortment of artwork that
was displayed throughout the apartment. Huge, swirling shapes on canvases drenched with color hung on
the walls while dazzling and often strangely shaped mobiles hung in the comers from the ceiling. Wildly
designed pieces of sculpture occupied several places on the floor and on the wide glass coffee table.
„Do you, uh, charge admission to the gallery?“ York asked wryly as he turned slowly to face her. One
dark brow lifted behind the frames of his glasses.
In spite of herself, Selena’s hazel eyes sparkled with humor. „Unfortunately I don’t think I could
convince very many people to pay to see most of this stuff!“
„You mean it’s not just me and my uncultured tastes? Other visitors lack an appreciation of all this art?“
York moved one hand in a flat arc to encompass the assortment around him.
„This,“ Selena announced, stepping firmly away from the door, „is a very personal collection.“
„You did all these?“ he asked in amazement.
„No, I’m not an artist. Everything you see here,“ she confessed ruefully, „is a gift.“
    „Some friends!“
„They are all the works of genuine artists, Mr. Sutherland,“ she corrected him loftily, sinking down onto
the white sofa. Her brightly colored knit dress was an added swatch of color against the light background.
„Please sit down,“ she added formally.
„Artists who happen to be a little ahead of their time?“ he hazarded in amusement as he relaxed into the
    chair across from her.
At that her mouth quirked. „I’m afraid so. In a few cases I don’t think the public will ever be ready for
some of this, er, talent!“ Her amused gaze went fondly to a purple-and-green canvas that hung on the
    opposite wall.
„So how did you end up with all of it?“ he pressed bluntly.
„It’s a little difficult to explain,“ she admitted slowly. „Most of the people who did these are customers at
the store I manage, you see, and…“
„And you let them pay their bills by giving you samples of their work?“ he demanded with the boundless
    disapproval of a true businessman.
„Hardly,“ she retorted. „Artistic Endeavors would have long since gone bankrupt if I’d
