adopted that sort
    of policy.“
    „So?“
Selena frowned. This really wasn’t any of his business. What was she doing explaining the situation to
him? „My store does have a policy of encouraging its clientele,“ she finally said coolly.
„I get it“ York surprised her by nodding in immediate comprehension. „You mean, you have a policy of
encouraging every struggling artist who comes along and they’re so damned grateful for the moral support
they repay you with some of their best efforts! You, in turn, haven’t got the heart to chuck their endeavors
into the trash! Instead you bring them home and find a place for them as if they were so many stray cats.“
Selena blinked in astonishment. „How did you guess?“ she asked weakly.
„It was rapidly becoming obvious as the facts piled up,“ he drawled with a hint of a grin. „And there’s a
certain softness in you that would contribute toward the situation.“
„Softness!“ she echoed coldly. „Mr. Sutherland, I’m not even going to ask what you mean by that.“ She
sat forward assertively, striving to take command of the situation. „Largely because I don’t care. Will you
kindly state your business and be on your way so I can have my dinner?“
    „York,“ he interposed gently.
    „What?“
„Call me York. I think matters have gotten to that point at least, don’t you? I haven’t had my dinner yet,
either.“ He smiled in what was probably meant to be an engaging way but which only served to make
Selena more wary. „It’s been a long, hard day. How about sharing a drink with me while I tell you my
    news?“
He was on his feet, pacing toward her kitchen, before Selena could think of a polite way to refuse the
request She turned helplessly on the couch to watch as he disappeared through the doorway and
reappeared on the other side behind the breakfast bar.
„I would appreciate it if you would simply tell me whatever it is that’s so important and take your leave!“
she gritted as he found a bottle of Sonoma County Riesling chilling in the refrigerator.
„I need a drink,“ he told her flatly, pulling open drawers in the all-white kitchen, until he found the
corkscrew. „What’s more, you’re going to need one, too.“
„Are you here to inform me of a death in the family or the collapse of the stock market?“ she inquired
    sarcastically.
„No, but what I have to say will signify a change in your future.“ He’d found a couple of long-stemmed
wine glasses and was striding back toward the chair across from her.
Selena drew a long breath as she watched him pour out the wine. „I should never have let you inside the
apartment,” she said with quiet resignation as he handed her the glass. „You’re here to make trouble, aren’t
you?“ Their eyes met in a moment of silent, mutual assessment.
„No. I’m here to prevent it,“ he said evenly.
„You expect me to believe that after what happened last night?“
He went very still for an instant and then raised his glass in a silent, mocking salute. The corner of his
mouth lifted a fraction. „Did you find what happened last night… troubling?“ he murmured deeply.
„It’s not polite to respond to a question with a question,“ she taunted, refusing to be trapped into an
    answer by the double-edged inquiry.
„I’m sure you’re not surprised by my lack of manners. I think you have me pegged as a little uncivilized
already, don’t you?“ York sipped his wine, his whole attention apparently on the Riesling’s bouquet Selena’s
mind made an intuitive connection. „And because I’ve pegged you correctly, I’m a potential source of
danger to you, aren’t I?“ she breathed knowingly.
The long, dark lashes behind the glasses lifted as York glanced up to catch her narrowed gaze.
    „Perhaps,“ he agreed cryptically.
„So it’s not just a case of detaching me from Richard’s side because of the element of psychological
    warfare involved. Taking
