fireplace. âBut there are secret passageways.â
âI shouldâve known.â
âItâs been quite a while since Iââ She broke off and began to mutter to herself as she pushed and tugged at the carved oak mantel. âI swear itâs one of the flowers along hereâthereâs a button, but you have to catch it just right.â With an annoyed gesture, she flicked the ponytail back over her shoulder. Adam watched her long, elegant fingers push and prod. He saw that her nails were short, rounded and unpainted. A schoolgirlâs nails, or a nunâs. Yet the impression of sexual vitality remained. âI know itâs here, but I canât quite⦠Et voilà .â Pleased with herself, Kirby stepped back as a section of paneling slid creakily aside. âNeeds some oil,â she decided.
âImpressive,â Adam murmured, already wondering if heâd gotten lucky. âDoes it lead to the dungeons?â
âIt spreads out all over the house in a maze of twists and turns.â Moving to the entrance with him, she peered into the dark. âThereâs an entrance in nearly every room.A button on the other side opens or closes the panel. The passages are horribly dark and moldy.â With a shudder, she stepped back. âPerhaps thatâs why I forgot about them.â Suddenly cold, she rubbed her hands together. âI used to haunt them as a child, drove the servants mad.â
âI can imagine.â But he saw the quick dread in her eyes as she looked back into the dark.
âI paid for it, I suppose. One day my flashlight went out on me and I couldnât find my way out. Thereâre spiders down there as big as schnauzers.â She laughed, but took another step back. âI donât know how long I was in there, but when Papa found me I was hysterical. Needless to say, I found other ways to terrorize the staff.â
âIt still frightens you.â
She glanced up, prepared to brush it off. For the second time the quiet look in his eyes had her telling the simple truth. âYes. Yes, apparently it does. Well, now that Iâve confessed my neurosis, letâs move on.â
The panel closed, grumbling in protest as she pushed the control. Adam felt rather than heard her sigh of relief. When he took her hand, he found it cold. He wanted to warm it, and her. Instead he concentrated on just what the passages could mean to him. With them heâd have access to every room without the risk of running into one of the staff or one of the Fairchilds. When an opportunity was tossed in your lap, you took it for what it was worth. Heâd begin tonight.
âA delivery for you, Miss Fairchild.â
Both Kirby and Adam paused on the bottom landing of the stairs. Kirby eyed the long white box the butler held in his hands. âNot again, Cards.â
âIt would appear so, miss.â
âGaloshes.â Kirby sniffed, scratched a point just under her jaw and studied the box. âIâll just have to be more firm.â
âJust as you say, miss.â
âCardsâ¦â She smiled at him, and though his face remained inscrutable, Adam would have sworn he came to attention. âI know itâs rude, but give them to Polly. I canât bear to look at another red rose.â
âAs you wish, miss. And the card?â
âDetails,â she muttered, then sighed. âLeave it on my desk, Iâll deal with it. Sorry, Adam.â Turning, she started up the stairs again. âIâve been bombarded with roses for the last three weeks. Iâve refused to become Jaredâs mistress, but heâs persistent.â More exasperated than annoyed, she shook her head as they rounded the first curve. âI suppose Iâll have to threaten to tell his wife.â
âMight work,â Adam murmured.
âI ask you, shouldnât a man know better by the time he hits sixty?â Rolling her
