ill.”
“It’s true. I tasted her.” Jul whispered the words quietly.
“So, you’ve bought yourself a resonate. Are you going to
sell her services? Raette will be the first in line.”
“I’m not selling her. She’s not just any resonate. She
healed Bink…he wasn’t born mute or lacking intelligence. Slavers crushed his
throat. She healed him with a touch, didn’t even know she was doing it. When I
tasted her, I felt her soul. I don’t know what to do, she wants to go home.”
“Don’t be a fool. She’s yours. If it’s too much for you,
I’ll pay you two years wages and take her off your hands. I’ll even pay for the
translator too. Think on it, but we’ll keep this between us. If word escapes
about her, you’ll never get a moment of peace. You’ll be bombarded with
requests. And if the king finds out what she is, he’ll confiscate her without
any payment to you. Sending her home would be equally cruel. Their world is
smaller and their lives are shorter. By the time you return her, everyone she
loves will be gone. In just her short time here, years on Earth have passed.”
Jul knew his friend was right. Keeping her would be a
challenge; keeping her a secret might be impossible. “I… She’s been hurt and is
very weak right now. If I call a doctor he might realize what she is and report
it.”
“What are you doing here? Go home and care for her.”
Jul nodded. He was glad he’d confided in Rex. His friend
wouldn’t let him down. He turned to leave, but the expression on Rex’s face
stopped him. “So you’d really like to own her?”
Rex looked embarrassed. “She’s unique…yes, I’d pay
handsomely for the opportunity to sleep with her.”
Hearing his friend admit it was disconcerting, but Rex
continued, “You know how much sleeping with her would mean to Raette, can you
honestly keep such a treasure to yourself?”
Jul wasn’t the type of man to be selfish. However, after
seeing into her could he do this to her? She was almost completely untouched,
and she’d lived in a world where sex was a hidden thing. Madison Edwards wasn’t
prepared for what Rex would do to her. Rex would be gentle, but Jul had tasted
her and understood her in a way that one without that bond would never know.
“I’ve made up my mind. Rex, I care for you and Raette like
family. There is only one way I will consent to this—you must taste her, Rae
too.”
The stunned look on his normally confident friend’s face was
priceless. “Are you insane? The bond we would form with her…with each other,
it’s not something we could ever change. Are you willing to let us have that
kind of connection with your resonate? We’d always feel her and want her. I
know Raette better than you do, she’d never be able to be content with just one
night. Are you willing to force this on the girl? I can see how you care for
her.”
“The three of us can protect her. I can’t do it alone.
You’ll have as much of a stake in her wellbeing as I do now. I took too much
blood from her, so we’ll have to wait to do this. The girl will have time to
adjust to her bond with me. Humans aren’t like us. They are weaker and feel so
much more than we do. You can’t imagine what I feel…the echoes of her emotions
are beyond description.”
“Go, care for her, Jul. I’ll take care of business and talk
with Rae. When you return we can make plans for this thing, but yes, I want
this. I won’t lie. I want her. This type of bond became outlawed centuries ago.
They’ll kill us if they find out. Are you really willing to risk this and share
her?”
“Yes.”
A moment of solidarity passed unspoken between them. Rex
nodded. “Go.”
Jul rushed home to find Madison was still unconscious. Oh,
great mother, I pray I haven’t killed her.
As he gazed at her, his heart filled with worry, he saw her
eyelids flutter.
Chapter 6
Madison opened her eyes. She saw Julstavius next to her bed,
his strange eyes looking at her, full of
