yourself.â
âPlease, letâs not go into that this morning.â
Alex poured another cup of coffee and set it in front of her best friend. âHow are you holding up?â
âAs well as can be expected, I guess.â Christian leaned her elbows on the table and stared down into her coffee cup. âI feel like a convicted criminal.â
Taking the chair opposite her, Alex reached out and touched Christianâs hand; the women locked gazes and without words, Christian drew encouragement.
âMaybe itâs a good thing that Iâm going home tomorrow.â The thought of home lifted her spirits.
Alex shook her head. âIâm sure going to miss you around here. But, please give my love to Bobby.â
âWhy donât you do it?â Christian brightened with an idea. âCome with me.â
âI would love to get back to Texas, but Iâve already committed myself to model Opulenceâs new jewelry line this month.â
Christianâs shoulders slumped as she jokingly poked out her bottom lip. âIâm going to miss you, too. Do you realize itâll be the first time since weâve met that weâll be apart so long?â
Alex smiled. âYeah. Itâs going to be strange.â
Christian returned the smile. Where would she be had it not been for Alexâs love and support through the years, especially after the death of her parents? âWhat about at the end of the month?â she suggested.
Shrugging, Alex answered, âIâm still going to Paris. I think it would be the perfect chance for me to boost my career.â
âSo youâre actually going to get on a plane?â
âIâm trying not to think about it.â
Christian took Alexâs hand. âYouâll be fine and youâre going to be great. I just know it.â
âThanks.â
When Christian fell silent, Alex guessed where her mind had wandered. âMalcolm is going to be fine.â
Christian crossed her arms and shook her head. âI wish I had handled it better. Confusing Jordan with Malcolm didnât help matters either.â
âWhat did happen out there in the gardens?â
âYou donât want to know.â
âTry me.â
âI made a fool of myself. The moment I saw who I thought was Malcolm, I started with this speech on how much his proposal had overwhelmed me, then gave him a âletâs be friendsâ speech.â
Alex frowned. âDidnât he try and tell you who he was?â
âI think so, but I kept asking him to let me finish. I must have looked like an idiot. But then he asked me for a good-bye kiss.â
âWhat?â Alexâs eyes widened, but then an amused smile curved her lips.
Christian shook her head. âI still donât understand why he did that, but thatâs when Malcolm found us together.â
âHe found you kissing his brother?â Alex turned serious. âThat must have devastated him.â
âEnraged is more like it.â Christianâs thoughts returned to the kiss. Even if Malcolm hadnât discovered them together, her mind had registered the difference in the kiss the moment their lips had touched. She remembered how her body had come alive, stirring emotions she had long denied herself.
âWas it that good?â Alex broke into her thoughts.
âWhat?â
âYou should see the look on your face.â She studied her friend. âIf I didnât know better, I would say that you enjoyed kissing Jordan. A lot.â
Christian stood. âDonât be ridiculous.â She refilled her coffee cup. âYou know the last thing I need or want right now is a relationship, especially one with my ex-fiancéâs twin brother.â
âTechnically, you were only engaged for about an hour.â
âAnd thatâs another interesting question. Why on earth did Malcolm propose to me?â
âIâve
