Laura says.
âHe is going to hurt himself,â Jolene says, as Ace backs into Emilyâs chair.
âGive it to me right now,â Morgan says.
âBut Iâm not finished reading it!â Ace says, still backing away. ââDear diary,ââ he reads, squinting at the paper heâs holding out and away from Morganâs grasping hands.
âAce Valentino Farber,â Morgan growls.
Dr. Ellman seems to be trying to speak in measured tones, which no one can hear. Brandon is poking at his phone. Morgan rushes at Ace and thereâs a horrible tearing noise. Ace says, âIâmsorry, Morgan. Iâm really sorry, Dr. Ellman.â Heâs holding up a crumpled, shredded piece of paper. Morgan has the other half. His expression is contrite.
âHeâs not sorry,â Morgan says with her teeth gritted. You can only do that when youâre really mad; otherwise you sound like youâre trying to talk with your mouth full. She waves her half of the paper at him. âI was working on that.â
âIâm really sorry,â Ace says.
âYou will be,â I say quietly, and Jolene laughs.
âEveryone sit down,â Dr. Ellman says. âThatâs enough adrenaline. Itâs time to breathe. You,â she says to Ace. âYou sit down here.â She taps our table.
âOh come on,â I say. I know whatâs coming.
âAshley,â Dr. Ellman says, âYou sit at Aceâs table.â She surveys Morgan and me. âValedictorian and salutatorian. There we go. Nice and peaceful.â
Laura makes an attempt at a save. âBut, Dr. Ellman, I was just about to ask Ashleyâs advice about my essay. Because we are both persons of color I think itâs important to address our intersectionality.â
But I think Dr. Ellmanâs reached her limit for the day. âJust. Write,â she says.
Morgan smiles sweetly up at me as I pull out my chair and drop my notebook on the table. Brandon winks at me, which is awfulbecause it is so very cheesy, and because he looks far too cute when he does that.
âOh god, Brandon, donât wink,â I say.
âI had something in my eye,â he says, and then he winks again.
âPlease stop that,â I say, but Iâm smiling at him.
Jessica Loh, sitting next to him, has turned pink and started giggling into her notebook as if he were talking to her. She has always seemed to get contact highs from boys.
âSo!â Morgan says. âWhat were we talking about over there?â She leans forward and looks at my notebook. âOh honey,â she says. âPizza? Youâve really written down pizza . Well, I suppose there are clichés for a reason.â
âMorgan, was that supposed to be a fat joke?â
âI donât know,â she says. âDo you feel fat?â
âI feel like your material needs some work,â I say. I slap my notebook shut and smile at her big. âSpeaking of! Howâs your essay going?â I nod at the wadded ball of paper in front of her.
âJust fine,â she says. âIâve already applied for early admittance to NYU. Iâm not worried.â Of course she has. Of course she isnât.
âThat will give you plenty of time to finish your other application to clown school,â I say. Makes devastating comebacks is not on my transcripts either.
Jessica is yearning at Brandon. She looks like she is made of cotton candy, swathed in acres of fluffy sweater and fluffy skirtand heart shapes instead of pupils. Heâs ignoring all of us, still staring at his phone.
âDonât worry. I wonât get my acceptance in time for your birthday party,â Morgan says. âThatâll be my gift to you.â She shows me her shark teeth.
âThat would be hard to wrap,â I say.
âBut what about your other gifts?â she continues. âI heard your grandmotherâs getting
