store. No time this morning for sex, but she did have time for a cuddle. With that in mind she reluctantly headed for the kitchen instead of the shower. They’d make up for the missed sex later.
She came to a halt when she saw Boone sitting at her table, frowning into his coffee cup. He’d already dressed, his hair damp, so he’d obviously been up for a while.
“Good morning.” She smiled and started toward him, expecting him to pull her onto his lap.
He flicked her a glance and looked back down into his cup. “Good morning, Rachel. We need to talk.”
Rachel froze. He wouldn’t meet her eyes. Changing direction, she moved to the coffee pot, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. He hadn’t moved. After pouring herself a cup of coffee, she hesitantly joined him at the table.
“Is something wrong?” she asked, a chill of fear running down her spine. Why didn’t he smile? Did he regret last night?
He sighed. “No, baby. I just wanted to talk to you about last night.”
She didn’t care for the way he wouldn’t meet her eyes, but continued to stare into his coffee. What had happened to the fierce lover that had taken her so completely last night? Where was the man that had slept holding her tightly against him all night long?
Chase appeared, slipping his shirt on. He moved to the coffee pot, flicking her a wary glance, and mumbling ‘good morning’ as he passed.
Something had to be very wrong.
“Last night was wonderful,” she began carefully. “Wasn’t it?” Please don’t tell me you regret it.
Chase sipped his coffee, leaning against the counter as he regarded her steadily.
Boone finally looked up. “Last night was the best night of my life.”
“Mine too,” Chase added and looked away.
“I don’t understand.” Rachel whispered, glancing back and forth between them. They certainly didn’t look like they’d both just had the best night of their lives. “You say last night was great but you both look like somebody kicked your puppy and neither one of you has even touched me this morning.”
Boone sighed and reached out, touching the sleeve of her robe. “We just want to make sure you understand what happened last night. Chase and I really care about you, Rachel, but we’re not looking for a permanent relationship.”
Rachel kept her features carefully blank as she felt her insides wither and die. They considered last night a mistake. She could see it in Boone’s eyes. She’d considered last night the beginning of something wonderful and they regarded it as a mistake.
“We’d like to keep seeing you, but we just want to make sure you understand that, at least for now, we can’t promise anything. It’s not that we’ll be seeing anyone else, though.”
She heard Boone as though from a distance as her heart shattered into a million pieces.
Chase looked up at her, his eyes sad. “We need to explain some things to you. We really care about you and want to see you but we’re not ready for anything more just yet.”
Boone covered her hand with his. “I hope you understand, baby, and will let us be part of your life.”
Silence filled the room for the several long moments it took Rachel to find her voice. When she did, it was laced with fury. “Oh, I understand all right. You want somebody to fuck without actually committing to anything!” She stood and flung her cup at the wall, hearing it shatter as she faced both men. “The only part of my life you want to be a part of is my sex life. Last night was your way of making sure nobody else would have me even though you don’t want me for yourself.”
She stormed to the doorway and spun to face them again. “After the way you pulled your caveman act and carried me out of the diner, no one in this town will ever be interested in me. That’s all you wanted. They’ll all consider me your property and won’t come near me again. I knew you didn’t really want me. I knew it and I still fell for it. I can’t believe
