which meant it wasnât a growl of aggression.
Dougal went to Graham before he left, pushing his muzzle at Grahamâs face. Graham let Dougal touch his wolf nose to Grahamâs, and Graham brought his hand up to pat Dougalâs side. âGo on,â Graham said.
Without looking at Misty, Dougal turned away from them and trotted down the little hill and into the desert. Misty watched until the wolf slunk away into the shadows of tall creosote, and then he was lost to sight.
Misty knelt next to Graham, who had closed his eyes again. âDonât go to sleep,â she said sternly. âYou lost a lot of blood. You need to stay awake.â
âShifter metabolism is different from a humansâ,â Graham said without opening his eyes. âIâll be fine.â
âThen you need to stay awake to keep me from worrying about you. Itâs my fault youâve been shot, so I need you to live.â
Grahamâs eyes opened a slit. âHow is this your fault? You didnât pull the trigger.â
âYou getting mixed up in my problems, thatâs my fault.â Misty hugged her arms across her chest, her shirt sweat-soaked and dirty. âI gave Sam Flores your number.â
âThat was smart. Stupid human thought Iâd bring Paul out here so he could be ambushed and killed.â Grahamâs brows drew together. âToo stupid. Somethingâs wrong.â
âWhatâs wrong is I need to warn Paul. If Sam tracks him down, heâs screwed.â
âLetâs make sure weâre not screwed first, all right? It will take Dougal a while to find civilization. Good thing Shifters heal fast.â
Graham already sounded a little stronger, but when Misty took his hand again, his grip was slack. âAll that with Dougalâmaking him take out the bullet and then sending him for helpâyou did that so he wouldnât be scared.â
Grahamâs grin cracked through dirt on his face. âYeah, you caught me.â
âWill he be all right?â
âProbably. Heâs been through a lot, and heâs learned to be tough. Poor cub got stuck with
me
to bring him up. Iâm the alpha of the alphas, but Dougalâs not that dominant. Other cubs gave him hell for it when he was growing up, and my pack still does. Heâs the natural choice to be my successor, but they know heâs not strong. The minute I drop dead, theyâll be all over him trying to throw him out and take over.â
Mistyâs mouth popped open. âThatâs terrible.â
Graham shrugged. âItâs a Shifter thing. They wonât touch him while Iâm around, and Iâm coming up with ideas to keep him safe. But having to fight back all the time has made Dougal stronger.â
Misty squeezed Grahamâs big hand. âYouâre good to take care of him.â
âHeâs my sisterâs son. I didnât have a choice. Thatâs another Shifter thing.â
âI bet you did have a choice. You could have had someone in your pack help you with him, right? You did it yourself because you felt sorry for him. You were being nice.â
Graham gave her a faintly startled look before his grin appeared again. âDonât tell anyone, all right? Iâve got a rep.â
âYouâre nice to me,â Misty said, stroking his shoulder.
âBecause youâre sexy as hell.â
He was joking. Graham always joked. In all the time sheâd known him, he was either yelling at someone or joking with them. A serious talk was not something Graham did.
Also, in the eight months Graham and Misty had been going out, heâd never made any move to take Misty to bed. Heâd kissed her . . . Wow, had he kissed her. Blood-sizzling, she-could-have-an-orgasm-just-kissing-him kisses. But nothing more.
Mostly Graham took her to clubs, like Coolers, or to out-of-the-way restaurants and bars that allowed Shifters.
