seems…” his eyes narrowed. “I had understood it to be some kind of stimulant.”
Andrea nodded. “Yes. It’s particularly useful for when you’re hungover and sore and suddenly have a kinky alien in your house.”
Jan’s lips twitched, and he smiled. “This is a common occurrence?”
Andrea gave him a wry look and turned away, walking towards the kitchen. As he had the night before, Jan followed her into the kitchen. She could feel him watching her as she emptied the spent grounds from the coffee maker’s basket and loaded it up once more with new grounds and water, pressing the brew button with an almost angry force.
She watched in silence as the dark liquid dripped down into the pot, unwilling to even look at Jan for the moment. Can aliens drink coffee? She wondered idly. Would he even know if he’s like… allergic to it? As the coffee finished brewing, Andrea reached up into her cupboard and took down her favorite mug. “Can you have coffee, or is it bad for you?” She didn’t quite look at Jan as she asked, one hand still among the clean mugs.
“It is not harmful for us. I have not tried it, but I can smell that it is not poison.” Andrea shrugged and took another cup down. Part of her mind, not numb with shock, asked the pertinent question. Why, exactly, was she giving a guy who was much larger than her, who had demonstrated he was more than capable of overwhelming her, a stimulant? Scientific curiosity, I guess, she thought. She poured her cup first, adding sugar and stirring with practiced movements before she turned to the fridge.
“I don’t…” she sighed, shaking her head and looking up at the ceiling. “Why don’t I just pour you a cup, and you can decide if you want anything else in it?” She finally risked a glance at Jan. He looked far more amused than she was.
“That seems like a good method,” he agreed. Andrea took a deep breath and pulled the carton of milk out, adding a dollop to her coffee and stirring it once more. She took a long sip, exhaling with satisfaction before she poured the second cup for Jan. Andrea picked up both mugs, and they went back into the dining room. She extended the un-doctored cup towards Jan, who sank down into the chair once more as soon as she was seated.
She watched, curious, as he sniffed at the mug for a moment and then brought it to his lips, sipping cautiously. “It is not bad—what were the things you put into your cup?”
Andrea shrugged, “Milk and sugar… they sweeten it.”
Jan smiled, “Why do you drink something that you must sweeten?”
“Because it’s full of caffeine, and it helps you think.” Andrea laughed.
Jan raised an eyebrow and nodded slowly, “May I taste yours?”
Andrea hesitated for a moment, partly out of possessive desire to drink the entire cup, and partly out of a sudden spurt of fear—did Jan have some kind of alien parasite, or disease, that she could catch from him? You had him last night…you kissed him. The time for worrying about swapping bodily fluids is pretty well past. She pushed her mug across the table towards him.
Jan sipped at her mug as cautiously as he had his own, and Andrea watched in bemused fascination as he seemed to roll the liquid around in his mouth, tasting it thoroughly. “This is too sweet,” he said, seeming to ponder for a moment. “But the richness is nice.” He hesitated for a moment before smiling broadly. “You like sweet things, I think.”
Andrea felt her cheeks burn with a blush. “Okay, let’s… let’s talk about some things.”
Jan nodded solemnly, taking another sip of his coffee. Andrea reclaimed her mug and drank down a little too much of the hot liquid, coughing as she got the still slightly-burning mixture past her throat. “First of all, you said you were a scientist. You were doing experiments—or something like that.”
Jan set his cup down. “My colleagues and I are looking for human women, this is true.” He looked
