forced me to remain here, but you struck me! And then, threatened to… to…”
“To spank you. Yes,” he sighed, looking down as he considered his words. “I’m afraid it’s somewhat of a habit of mine. Old-world values. I must keep order in my home and I find that is a way that works admirably well, particularly with naturally submissive women. I do apologize for being so forward with you.”
“I am not a submissive woman, Baron Kalnovky. I have control over my own life and am highly educated, independent, self-sufficient, and have my own thoughts and opinions…”
“Of course, and those are all admirable qualities that make you interesting and unique. However, there is a part inside of you that secretly longs to relinquish your strength to a man who will allow you to be soft, feminine and cared for. And be taken in hand and held accountable for your prideful behaviors. Deny my strength and your own needs, Miss Wells, and we shall let this subject rest,” Marcas said firmly, locking her eyes with his. Courtney swallowed hard as she reddened, her stomach fluttering as she felt wetness spread beneath her.
When she did not respond, Marcas smiled gently with a nod and continued, “I am drawn to the submissive as strongly as they are drawn to me. You have no reason to be ashamed of being what you are. However, while you fulfill your contract here, always remember that we each have our roles and I will not hesitate to take hold of my position. Even on your bottom, if I must. With that said, do not leave this house again without letting me know. Nor will you skip meals. Yes?”
Courtney gulped, shivers traveling down her arms and she fought not to break eye contact with the overpowering man who exuded pure strength and raw sensuality. “I will not be kept prisoner here,” she forced out, trying to hide the desire to flee like a frightened rabbit.
“You are not a prisoner. You may come and go as you desire, only let me know your whereabouts and be back to care for Sebastian. Because the light is so painful for me, I would prefer you take his care in the daylight hours and permit me to resume it at night. Would that be reasonable?”
“Yes, very much. Are you saying I don’t have to stay here if I don’t want to?”
“Yes. If you honestly wish, you may leave. But you must truly desire this in your heart. If I read you correctly, your integrity will prevent you from leaving for reasons related to your pure stubborn pride.”
“I don’t get paid enough to deal with this crap. I’ll get him stabilized and then I’m out of here.”
“Very well. Again, if this is your heart’s desire, you may go. I will deal with your chastisement later, after you have rested,” Marcas announced, crossing his arms as he studied her.
“My chastisement? You have got to be kidding.”
“I am a man of my word. Are you a woman of your word as well?”
    “You will not touch me.”
“I asked you a question. You promised to stay to stabilize Sebastian. Will you do so or will you run?”
“I don’t run from anything, Marcas. You don’t frighten me.”
“I bear to disagree. You are terrified. But not of me…” he peered into her face, “you are afraid of yourself. The part you cannot control; the part you haven’t come to peace with.”
“Have you had your eyes looked at?” Courtney forced out, changing the subject from his insane threats and attempts to manipulate her.
“Yes, they cannot be healed. I… Miss Wells? What are you doing?”
“Please, just call me Courtney. Now, hush up and look up at me,” Courtney ordered, carefully directing her pen light over his eye. He immediately squinted and pulled away painfully. She smacked his arm, adjusting the light to a different frequency. “Don’t be such a baby. Can you tolerate anything touching your eye, like drops or lenses?”
    “Yes, but…”
“I have an idea but I want a promise from you. If I can help make the light less painful for you, will you
