tingling from his delicious kiss. She attempted to change the subject, “Can I get you anything?”
“I need to sleep. Tell me the truth, child. How long do I have?”
“I wish I could give you an exact time, but I can’t. Your vital signs are low, but they haven’t started to fluctuate. You’re still able to eat and drink, and you are voiding so your organs haven’t started to shut down. All I can do right now is watch for changes. If you want, I can promise to let you know if I see anything.”
“This career must be hard for a delicate heart such as yours. I can see the sadness in your eyes,” Sebastian said quietly, still holding her hand warmly.
Courtney smiled gently. “What I find the hardest is that I meet wonderful people such as yourself and regret not having had the opportunity to know them while they were strong and vibrant. Marcas is a very fortunate man to have known you for so long.”
“And I, him. He is a very special and unique soul. You will discover the depth of it as you fall in love with him,” Sebastian murmured, his eyes closing.
“I have no intention on falling in love with him…” Courtney began, feeling his hand grow limp as the medication took effect. She chuckled, tucking the blankets around him after propping his slender body with pillows. “You crafty old dodger. Gotta get the last word, huh?”

Chapter Three

“Courtney, I must speak with you immediately. I have urgent business,” Marcas stated, opening up her bedroom door where she was sitting on the bed, reading. Without waiting for an invitation, he strolled in and pulled up a chair next to her and pulled the book out of her hand.
She frowned. “Excuse me, but knocking is considered customary in this country. What do you want?”
“You did not present for dinner,” Marcas commented, frowning at her choice of reading material before tossing the book on the end table.
“So? I wasn’t hungry. Is that what you consider urgent? If so, you may leave.”
Marcas glanced at the window. He still had at least an hour before sunset. “Your health is important to me. You are to join me at every meal. I made it clear that you were not to skip any meals or to disregard your health. This is not a discussion.”
    “Now listen here, Lurch …”
“You are a diabetic. Even I am aware of the delicacy of the disease and how it must be handled. Do not sacrifice your well-being to show me how stubborn you can be. I assure you, I have the art of stubbornness and foolish choices down to a science.”
“What do you want from me, Marcas? Other than to drive me crazy with your bossiness.”
“I want to take Sebastian back home before he dies.”
Courtney sat up straight, drawing her legs under her. “I don’t know if he can take the travel, Marcas. He’s very weak.”
“I know that. He would be happier if he passes in his home than in this place. I can arrange a private jet. I must try to give him this.”
“It’s between the two of you. The meds are easy enough to control…”
    “You are coming with us.”
Courtney raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms to glare at him. Once again, he easily met her gaze without wavering. It was a silent battle of the wills and both sides stubbornly held their stare until Marcas cleared his throat.
“Please, come with us. He… I need you to help me.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard now, was it? Is he sleeping?”
“Yes, I just checked on him. How soon can we depart?” he asked, ignoring her gloating.
“I have not agreed to go anywhere with you. And, truthfully, I doubt I will. Besides the obvious issues that I don’t have a passport or enough medications to last an extended trip, our circumstances are not ones I considered ideal. If you hold me here against my will, what are you going to do outside the US?” Courtney asked firmly. “You should give him at least one more day to stabilize and see how he responds to a fentanyl patch. By the way, I need to go to
