that voice sounded like…
“If I’m not, is Yolanda Gray home?”
    Shane McFiggins.
Yolanda paled, for a moment unable to move. Then, realizing that she was keeping him waiting, she straightened the front of her clothes, sniffing them to make sure they didn’t smell, and then sniffing herself. Afterwards, she hastily combed her hair with her fingers, put on her cardigan and opened the door.
“Shane,” she said upon seeing him, summoning her brightest smile in order to make up for making him wait. “This is a surprise. What are you doing here?”
“Since you weren’t well enough to come to my house, I thought I’d come to your apartment,” he said, smiling. He lifted his hands. “I brought dinner.”
She looked at the bags of Chinese take-out boxes. “You shouldn’t have.”
“I wanted to,” he said. “Figured if I was coming to visit you, I had to bring you something and since I didn’t know what flowers you liked, I brought dinner instead.”
“Good choice,” she mumbled, taking the boxes from him before opening the door wider. “Come in.”
“How are you feeling?” Shane asked as he stepped inside.
“Better but still a little weak,” she told him the truth. “Are you sure you don’t want to go back home? You might catch my cold, you know, or whatever virus it is. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for you losing your voice.”
“It’s alright,” he said. “Now’s a good a time to get sick as any since I’m done with my tour.” He looked around. “You’ve got a nice place.”
“Thanks,” Yolanda said as she set down the bags he brought on the coffee table. Inside, though, she wished she had fixed it up some more. Well, at least it wasn’t cluttered or dusty. “You didn’t have to come, you know,” she added, still unable to believe Shane was right here in her apartment.
“Do you want me to leave so you can rest?”
“Oh no,” she said quickly. “That’s not what I meant.”
If truth be told, resting wasn’t such a bad idea since her stomach hadn’t fully settled, but at least right now it seemed a little calmer, and she said a quick prayer to baby Jesus hoping it would stay that way. After all, she would be damned if she turned Shane away twice in one day.
“You don’t have a dog?” he asked as he sat on the couch.
“No,” she answered. “The building doesn’t allow dogs.”
    “Oh. That’s sad.”
“Then again, I’ve never had a dog so I’m not sure I would have gotten one if it was allowed.” She said as she took the boxes out of the bag. “Let’s see, you got beef and broccoli, sweet and sour pork, Kung Pao chicken, fried dumplings, egg rolls, fried rice and luohan zhai. Wow, either you must be hungry or you must think I have a big appetite.”
“I didn’t think that,” he said quickly, blushing slightly. “I just didn’t know what you’d like so I got a bit of everything.”
“That you did,” Yolanda agreed, grinning. “And I was just teasing you. I know I really can work up an appetite sometimes.”
“Are you hungry now?” he asked.
“A little,” she said. Strangely, it was the truth. She hadn’t really eaten anything after breakfast, after all, or more accurately, after those blasted chocolates.
“Good.” He smiled. “And just to set the record straight, I don’t…” He stopped, his expression seemingly tormented as he tried to come up with the right words to say. “I don’t mind…” He scratched his brow. “Like I said before, you’re beautiful.”
“You mean you don’t mind that I’m a little overweight?”
“Yes,” he said. “I mean no, I don’t mind. I mean…” He stopped, getting confused himself.
Yolanda chuckled. “I get it. I get it.”
    “But really, you are beautiful.”
Yolanda looked away, thankful that her skin was dark enough to hide the blush that had suddenly spread throughout her cheeks. She wanted to tease him again, tell him he probably told that compliment to a million
