exercise.â
We filed after the coach down to the other end of the hall to where the âstairsâ sign glowed red. He pushed open the door and we all went into the stairwell. The sound of our feet echoed loudly as we all thundered down the stairs. I looked back over my shoulder, up to the landing. Kia was gingerly making her way down the stairs, one hand holding onto the railing.
She looked down at me. âDo you think itâs easy getting around in these things?â she asked, holding one sandaled foot in the air.
âJust be careful,â I said.
âWill you at least wait up?â Kia asked.
âSure⦠no problem,â I said as everybody continued down the stairs, leaving us farther and farther behind, the sounds of their voices and feet disappearing down the stairwell beneath us.
âI feel so stupid,â Kia said. âI look so stupid.â
âYou donât look stupid,â I said.
âOf course, I do⦠donât I?â
I shook my head. âSeriously, you look okay.â
âJust okay?â she asked.
âOkay⦠better than okay,â I said. What exactly was it she wanted me to say, that she was beautiful? Sheâd be waiting a long time to hear that.
âWell⦠even if I look okay, I still feel stupid, and Iâm going to feel stupid in front of hundreds of people.â
âItâll be fine,â I offered reassuringly. âItâs not like youâll be alone. Weâll all be there with you.â
âWill you do me a favor?â she asked.
âI guess⦠sure⦠if you want⦠whatâs the favor?â
âWhen we get down to the receptionâ¦â
âYeah?â
âCould you stay right there with me?â she asked.
âAt the reception?â
She nodded her head.
âWhy do you want me to do that?â I questioned.
âI just want you to!â she snapped.
âSure, if thatâs what you want.â
âMaybe not the whole time. Just let me see how it goes.â
I nodded in agreement. âAre you feeling nervous?â
âNo, of course not⦠maybe just a little.â
I tried to stifle a laugh, but it came out.
âWhat are you laughing at?â she demanded.
âNothing,â I said.
âThatâs it, Iâm not going down there,â she said, turning on her heel and starting back up the stairs.
âKia!â I called out, and bounded after her. She moved so slowly in the sandals that I caught up with her before sheâd gone no more than a few steps. I grabbed her by the arm.
âYou have to come down,â I pleaded.
âIâm not going down there to have all those people laugh at the way Iâm dressed.â
âI wasnât laughing at the way youâre dressed, honestly!â
âThen what were you laughing at?â she asked again.
âWell⦠it just seemed sort of funny that Iâm usually the one who feels nervous about things andtoday itâs you. Thatâs all.â
âYouâd be nervous too if you were dressed stupid.â
âYou think I like wearing this get-up?â I asked, referring to my dress clothes and tie.
âIâd trade you in a second,â she said, and then burst into laughter.
âNow, what are
you
laughing at?â I demanded.
âI was just thinking of you wearing this dress⦠or even better, Mark. Iâd just go right up to him and tell him how
beautiful
he looked.â
âI donât know,â I said, âbut I donât think Mark would look that good in a dress.â
âProbably not, but why did he have to go and say that about me?â
I swallowed hard. âI donât think he was trying to make fun of you.â
âThen why did he say it?â she asked.
I swallowed even harder. âMaybe thatâs what he thought.â
âThat I look beautiful?â
I nodded my head. I really, really
