happen.”

“That’s what you said last time.”

Jenna jabbed the pencil into the mug.

“And last time I was right,” she snapped.

“Jenna, whatever made you take the chance?” She sank onto the desk chair, scenes from that fabulous night skimming through her mind. She stared off into space.  “Cindy. Picture it. Five in the morning. Alone in an elevator with an incredibly hunky stranger.”

    “Mmm. Yeah, okay.”

Jenna knew Cindy was imagining the scene, probably drooling.  Jenna’s own thoughts strayed back to the incredible experience and her insides quivered.

“We’re still talking about Ryan here, right?” Cindy confirmed.

“Of course we are!” Jenna replied.

“Okay, good. Well, you two are in a committed relationship.  He’ll probably want to take it to the next level. Things are working out between you two again, aren’t they?” Jenna thought about the months of neglect, then thought about the amazing fantasy he’d given her.

“He really made an effort last week, but is it enough?” Her face fell to her hands. Oh, heavens, this couldn’t be happening to her.

“Did he call you while he was away?”

“No.” Jenna twirled the phone cord around her finger. “He called me when he got back yesterday.”

“When are you seeing him again?”

“Tomorrow night.” Jenna tugged her finger free from the cord and watched it spring back and forth. “We’re having dinner together.”

“Are you going to tell him then?”

    “Yes.”

“Will you marry him if he asks?”

Would she? Marriage didn’t necessarily solve everything.  If they got married but he still threw himself into his work, she might as well be on her own. Would he be emotionally and physically available to her, married or not?  “Jenna?”

She laid her hand on her stomach, imagining she could feel the stirrings of a new life inside her.

She wanted her baby to grow up with his father fully a part of his life. Not like hers. Her parents had divorced when she was only three and she remembered crying desperately, begging Daddy to stay. He’d held her and she remembered him shedding his own tears. Her older brother, Shane, had gone with their father. For a couple of years she saw them every weekend, but then Daddy’s work required him to move to Vancouver, on the far side of the country. After that, she only saw them a couple of times a year.

The void that had left in her life still haunted her. She couldn’t do that to her own child.

    “Yes. I will.”

    CHAPTER FOUR

RYAN KNOCKED ON Jenna’s apartment door, longing to see her face again. The face that filled his dreams every night, and his daydreams all day.

She opened the door and warmth flooded through him.  Her eyes shone brightly and her face seemed to glow. He’d definitely been away from her too long. The problem was he never wanted to be away from her at all. If he did what his heart dictated, he’d be with her all the time, neglecting everything else, and if he did that his business would slide. All the success he’d worked so hard to achieve would dissolve.  She had become a dangerous obsession. Staring at her sweet glowing face right now, however, he almost didn’t care.  And that scared him most of all.

“Hi.” She seemed a little reserved as she stepped back from the door to let him in.

She closed the door behind him and stood silently watching him. The rich blue sweater and snug black jeans she wore accentuated her lovely curves. He couldn’t believe such a beautiful woman chose to be with him. He took her hand and drew her toward him, then tipped up her chin and kissed her.

Her hands curled around his neck, her soft lips responsive under his.

The familiar stirrings rumbled within him but he stamped them down, not allowing them to overtake him. He’d had lots of practice over the past several months. If he. gave in to
