pardon.â
âNo reason why you should know.â A slight frown creased Vin's forehead. âSeptor's her consort.â
To their left, a door-membrane bore an upward-pointing blue arrow.
âThe restaurant's a long way round the rim,â said Vin. âWe'd save time going straight through, if you don't mind the g-shift.â
âNo problem,â said Yoshiko, hiding her uncertainty.
âYou're sure?â
Yoshiko nodded, and led the way through the membrane. A small spherical car was bobbing inside, waiting. She and Vin took facing cocoon seats.
Acceleration clutched her as the car shot upwards. Corridor entrances flicked past, then crew-access tunnels. The car slowed.
âWe're near the spin-axis,â said Vin. âOh, listen.â
Distant pipes and fiddles echoed, from the depths of a utilitarian tunnel.
ââThe Rocky Road to Dublin,ââ said Yoshiko, surprising herself.
The car began to turn over.
Yoshiko just glimpsed a rough holoâFREEFALL CEILIDH TONITEâbefore the car flipped completely, leaving her stomach behind.
She shut her eyes, and kept them shut until the car had finished dropping through all the levels.
âWe're here,â said Vin. âAreâ?â
âI'm fine.â Yoshiko climbed out, and forced herself to stand steadily. âReally.â
âThe restaurant's just along here.â Vin's lips twitched. âThese cars really give me an appetite.â
Â
âSeptor Maximilian.â
âSunadomari Yoshiko.â
They shook hands briefly, across the table.
âAnd this is Lori,â said Vin. âMy soul-mother.â
Lori's handshake was firmer, her smile friendlier, than her consort's.
âSo, what shall we have?â
They spent a few minutes over the menu icons, then silence settled on the table.
âDo youâ?â
âWas yourâ?â
Lori laughed. âYou first, Yoshiko.â
âI wondered whether you enjoyed your trip to Earth.â
âToo short,â said Lori, glancing at Septor, who said nothing.
âFun, though.â Vin looked wistful.
Septor's voice was heavy with self-importance. âWe made a point of getting to know Earthers of every social stratum.â
Vin glanced up, as though there were something to be seen above Yoshiko's head, and reddened slightly.
âAnd some of them became our friends,â she said harshly.
Septor laughed. The couple seated at the next table looked up.
âIndeed. It was interesting to see civilization'sââ Septor's smile was mocking. ââ
OurÂ
civilization's precursors.â
A human waiter accompanied by a smartcart walked up, and transferred drinks from cart to table.
âI'm glad you found Earth interesting, Septor,â said Yoshiko. âI was surprised to hear Fulgor isn't as law-abiding as I'd expected.â
âWe haven't outgrown sensationalist NewsNets, that's for sure.â
Lori leaned forward, placing a hand on Septor's arm while looking directly at Yoshiko. âIs this your first trip to Fulgor?â
âI'm going to see my sonââ
A sudden hush descended upon the restaurant. Towards the rear, a privacy booth had unveiled. A lone Pilot stepped out, a formal black cape draped over her jumpsuit.
âTwo in one day,â breathed Vin.
A wave of silence travelled with the Pilot.
âShe's coming this way.â
The Pilot stopped at their table. In her taut olive-skinned face, her eyesâblack-on-black Pilot's eyesâwere glistening orbs of jet, totally sans whites. Shadowed pits, leading to unknown worlds.
âProfessor Sunadomari.â The Pilot bowed low. âI am Pilot Jana de Vries.â
Yoshiko bowed in return.
âMy commiserations,â added the Pilot, âon your husband's death. He was a fine man.â
Yoshiko's vision blurred with tears.
âThank you.â
After a moment, Septor cleared his throat.
âI
