across KJâs head. She chuckled. âIt wouldnât be a surprise if I told you what it was, would it?â She tapped Kenae on her nose. âYoutwo better send me pictures every day so I can see what youâre up to. You can use that phone for something other than music. Okay?â
âOkay, Mom,â Kenae said.
âIâll send a video,â KJ added.
âThatâll be great, KJ.â
Mary Margaret looked up at Kenneth. âWeâd better head for the gate. We still have to go through security and that line is pretty long.â
âOkay, babe,â he said. âYou guys got all your stuff?â he asked the kids. âDo you need help with anything?â
The kids shook their heads.
âOkay, then,â Destiny said. âCome and give your mom a hug big enough to last the entire summer.â
âMom,â KJ whined, but he did as she asked.
âYou be good,â she whispered in his ear. âI love you and Iâm going to miss you. Iâll be looking for your video updates. Theyâll be the highlights of my summer.â
âOkay, Mom,â he said.
âBye, Mom,â Kenae said, giving her mother a big hug. âIâm going to miss you.â
âIâll miss you, too, baby,â she said. âBut youâre going to have a great time. Just make sure to take time out of your busy schedule to call your old mom.â
âI will,â the young girl said.
âOkay, gang, letâs head off.â Kenneth pointed to the security line. âThat line is calling our names.â
While Kenneth was busy with the kids, Mary Margaret stepped closer to Destiny. âWeâll take good care of them,Destiny,â she said. âTheyâre going to miss you, of course, but weâll try to make the trip a fun and educational time for them.â
Destiny took a deep breath. Though he was engaged with the kids, she could sense that Kenneth was waiting to hear how she would respond. âI know you will, Mary Margaret,â she said, and felt Kenneth relax. âAnd if they give you any trouble, Iâm just a phone call away.â
âIâm sure it wonât come to that,â Mary Margaret said. âIâm looking forward to having the time with them. I enjoy having them around. Theyâre good kids.â
Given that Mary Margaret and Kenneth wanted the kids to spend more time with them by living with them full-time during the school year, Destiny wasnât sure how to take that comment. âWell, you can enjoy them for the summer,â she said, using what she hoped was a light tone to restate her own case. âJust be sure to bring them back to me.â
Chapter 6
D ESTINY HAD STAYED AT THE AIRPORT UNTIL THE flight to Los Angeles departed. Though she didnât accompany her kids to the concourse, she took comfort in sitting in the airport until she knew they were safely off the ground and en route to their destination. While she waited, sheâd changed out of her dress and heels into a pair of form-fitting jeans more suited for a cookout and sandals that showed off her recently painted toenails. She was dressed more casually, but she knew she still looked good.
By the time she pulled into Natalieâs driveway, three things had become very obvious to her. First, she had to keep herself busy or sheâd go crazy worrying about her kids; second, there was no way she was going to go the entire summer without seeing them; third, now that sheâd told them about the surprise, she had to make the move to Gwinnett happen or come up with something equally exciting.
As she checked her face in the rearview mirror, Destiny acknowledged that making Mary Margaret uncomfortablewasnât the only reason sheâd taken special care with her appearance today. She also wanted to make a good impression on this Daniel character that Natalie was so high on her meeting. She hadnât really dated
