since before the kids were born, so this was all new to her, new and a bit uncomfortable. The guy had better be worth the anxiety she was feeling. If it turned out he wasnât, sheâd make Natalie promise to give up on her matchmaking efforts. She didnât think she could go through this again and again. Her emotions couldnât take it.
Satisfied with how she looked, Destiny climbed out of the car and followed the sounds of laughter, chatter, and music to the back of the house.
âDestiny,â Natalie called out, as soon as she rounded the corner. âIâm glad you came.â She leaned in and gave her friend a brief hug. âDid your kids get off all right?â
Destiny nodded. âI came here straight from the airport.â
Natalie rubbed her hand down Destinyâs arm. âHow are you holding up?â
âLetâs just say Iâm glad I had somewhere to go after leaving the airport. Returning to that empty and much-too-quiet townhouse would be a bit much right now.â
Putting an arm around her shoulder, Natalie said, âCome on then. There are some folks I want you to meet.â
Destiny chuckled. âSome folks, huh?â
Natalie rocked her hip against Destinyâs side. âOkay, one person first, but I promise thereâll be other folks later.â Natalie stopped when she reached her apron-wearing husband and an attractive bronze-skinned man in jeans and a paleblue polo shirt. âFood ready?â Natalie asked to get her husbandâs attention.
When Gavin looked up and saw them, he said, âSpeak of the devil.â
âYou two are the only devils I see here,â Natalie said, grinning. âWhat have you been saying about me?â
Gavin inclined his head toward Destiny. âNot you. We were talking about Destiny.â
âAll good, I hope,â Destiny said, meeting Danielâs gaze. He was a tall guy, about six feet two, with a killer smile. So far so good. If he passed the conversation test, sheâd have to tell Natalie sheâd done a good job.
Gavin leaned over and kissed Destinyâs check. âWhat else could it be?â he asked. âI was just telling Daniel here that he needed to be on his A game if he wanted any chance at winning your heart.â
âMy heart?â Destiny repeated, glancing again at Daniel. âIâm thinking of keeping my heart to myself.â
Gavin turned to the man next to him. âSheâs everything I said she was, isnât she?â
Daniel extended his hand to Destiny. âIâm Daniel Thomas,â he said. âYouâll have to forgive my buddy here.â
âI feel your pain,â she said, taking his hand. âMy girl here is just as bad.â
âWell,â Natalie said, with fake upset, âI guess thatâs our cue to leave, Gavin. These two seem like they were made for each other.â
âIâm right behind you, babe.â He winked at Destiny as he passed her. âI can tell where Iâm not needed or wanted.â
Destiny chuckled. âThey mean well.â
Daniel laughed. âI know, but havenât they heard of subtlety?â
Destiny laughed with him. âApparently not.â
âDespite all their plotting and scheming,â Daniel said, âIâm glad to finally meet the mysterious Destiny.â
âMysterious?â
âIt was like pulling teeth to get any information about you. They only told me that you were wonderful, and the rest Iâd have to find out on my own.â
Destiny chuckled. âWell, that makes you the mysterious Daniel because Natalie has told me very little about you.â
He flashed that killer smile at her. âThatâs easily corrected. Iâm in need of a meal companion. If youâre hungry, we can get some food and then sit and get to know each other.â
âSounds good to me,â Destiny said.
After they filled their plates, Destiny
