vulnerability had washed over him, waiting for her verdict.
How endearing.
âI, em â¦â Sensible Sadie was tugging at her conscience â
refuse, young lady. Get out of here.
But Fun Sadie was winning the battle. Right now she should be heading back to a computer file full of facts and figures, budgets and cash flow forecasts. But she felt magnetised to the spot. The epitome of torn.
But you know every word already. Every page, every projection.
Maybe a little âr and râ tonight would help her get centred for tomorrow â help her go all-out to impress the investor, the top man himself. All she had to do was make him like her and want to invest in her. And who didnât like Sadie? This Mac guy certainly did â sheâd felt it in his body, seen it in his eyes.
âIâm not sure. Iâve got people to seeââ
âPlaces to go, yes I know,â he added. âBut Iâm still asking.â
A loud âfairy taleâ alert was ringing in her ears. The thought of getting up close and personal with this sexy stranger was like her purest fantasy. But this wasnât a fantasy â it was real life. Although, come to think of it, the whole of the last month had been something of a dream ⦠so why break the spell now? Winning a competition, jetting off to far-flung corners of the earth to pick up her prize, and beginning the helter-skelter business ride she was now clinging onto by her fingertips. So why not add a fling?
No one would know.
And if she didnât do it now, it might be months â years â before she got another chance for a no-strings encounter like this. If indeed, that was what he was offering.
âWell?â he asked.
âA-are you always such a quick worker?â she gasped.
âOnly with anyone in a tight navy suit and very inappropriate footwear.â
âEven the women?â
He laughed.
âMac â I need you â now, please!â came the Captainâs voice again.
âWith you in a sec, Capân. Just finishing up here.â He turned to Sadie. âOr have we just started?â
She smiled.
He beamed back, he genuinely glowed, and Sadie felt a thrill of awareness, a rush of adrenalin. And an overpowering urge to dance a little.
âSo youâll come?â His pleasure was so youthful, so exuberant. But romantic interludes had definitely not been on the agenda this trip.
Oh hell â¦
She frowned.
âLook,â he said, âif youâre too busy, or you donât want to, then just say. Iâm a bit out of practice at all this asking out stuff. Itâs just that you happen to be very attractive,â to which Sadie looked down before she started blushing, âand fun. Plus I happen to be celebrating the end of an era, so Iâd like very much for you to join me. If youâd like to. Unless you have other plans â¦â
âItâs not that.â
âOr maybe youâve already got someone.â
âItâs not that either â¦â
âSo?â
âWell, I would
like
to meet you this eveningââ she replied.
âI sense a âbutâ.â
âBut, well â¦â She bit her tongue. Her usual response was so nearly out of her mouth
â but I have to get back to my children
. But for once, she didnât. Not for precisely twenty-two hours.
She took a deep breath.
â
But
, it would mean interrupting my very tight itinerary and rescheduling my commitments. And as for asking my âstaffâ to entertain themselves at dinner tonight â they wonât like it, wonât like it at all.â He hung on her every word. There were no staff, nor any elaborate plans for dinner, but she was enjoying playing along. And it had been ages since sheâd been out on the town. â
But
 ⦠itâs not impossible â¦â
He brightened.
â⦠In fact, I suppose it
