on the big beanbag. âWhat shall we make her do, girls?â
âBurst into Timâs bedroom without knocking,â Lila suggested, giggling.
Polly paled. âDonât make me do that. Your brother already thinks Iâm mad.â
âHeâs only met you once, why would he think that? Ooh, wait.â Lila sat up, her eyes gleaming. âI have a better idea. Knock on Timâs door and tell him you have a crush on him.â
Rhi burst out laughing as Polly groaned and covered her head with her hands. Lila looked triumphant.
âCan I accept the first dare instead?â Polly begged.
âItâs much too late for that,â Eve said, grinning. âGo on. We all agreed that if we said the R word weâd pay the price.â
Polly took a very deep breath and got to her feet. âI hate you all,â she said as she walked out of Lilaâs room.
Rhi huddled up close with the others by the doorframe as they listened to Pollyâs footsteps on the landing. There was a muffled knock, and the sound of a door opening.
âSheâs actually doing it,â Lila said, looking at Rhi and Eve with wide eyes. âI never thought Polly had it in her!â
Polly was the shyest in the group. If Rhi hadnât heard her knock with her own ears, she would never have believed Polly would rise to a challenge like this. She couldnât think of anything more mortifying. She wriggled a little further back into the room, dreading what she might overhear.
âGoing out with Ollie must be improving her confidence,â Lila went on. âDid either of you think sheâd do it?â
âShh,â Eve said, âIâm trying to listen .â
The three of them were almost flattened against the bedroom wall as Polly flew back into the room again with cheeks as pink as two roses.
âWhat did he say?â Rhi asked breathlessly. âNo, donât tell me, I donât think I can stand itâ¦â
âYou seriously told my brother you had a crush on him?â said Lila, trying to peer around Polly towards her brotherâs room.
Polly went pinker. âI said what you told me to say.â
âThen how come I just saw Tim walking down the street?â asked Eve, who was standing at the window. âThereâs no way he could have got downstairs and out of the front door between now and then.â
âOh my gosh, you liar ,â said Lila, poking Polly in the shoulder. âHe wasnât in his room, was he?â
Rhi could hardly breathe for laughing. The ache in her stomach felt so good. She hadnât laughed properly for ages.
âI said it though,â Polly insisted stubbornly through the gales of laughter. âJust because he wasnât there to hear it, doesnât mean I didnât complete the forfeit.â
âYouâre forgiven,â Lila gasped, catching her breath. âBut only because that was actually hilarious. Going out with Ollie suits you. I never thought youâd even knock on the door.â
Polly beamed. âI still canât believe weâre together. This is Ollie weâre talking about, after all. Heâs like a sort of ⦠god.â
âOm,â said Eve solemnly, putting her hands in a prayer position, and making Lila laugh all over again. âIf Polly and Ollie are cute, you and Josh are just completely adorable, Lila. You canât take your eyes off each other. I donât think Iâve ever seen you this happy.â
Lila gave a little twirl on the carpet. âAnd what about you and Becca?â
Eveâs eyes were soft. âWhat about us?â
âTalk about made for each other,â Polly sighed. âYouâre a different person now youâre with her, Eve. So much ⦠nicer.â
Eve swatted Polly gently with a magazine, but she was smiling.
Rhi tried to smile too. It wasnât that she begrudged her friends their various happy relationships.
