It was just ⦠she felt a little left out of conversations like this these days. If only she could sort out her feelings for Brody. If only he would ask her out.
âI think we should stop talking about our love lives now,â said Polly, catching sight of the expression on Rhiâs face.
The others looked guilty. Rhi flushed. âOh, please donât do that,â she begged. âI like hearing about you guys. You heard enough about me and Max over the years.â
âMax is history,â said Eve with a wave of her hand. âWeâre more interested in you and Guitar Hero these days. How are you getting along?â
Rhi flushed even more as all three of her friends fixed her with beady eyes.
âBrody?â she stammered. âOh, you know. Weâre just friends.â
âThere was nothing friendly in that kiss you had when you were doing your recording a few weeks ago,â Lila observed.
Rhi felt hot at the memory. It had been ⦠intense. Especially when Max had come barging in and punched Brody in the jaw. âOne moment of madness,â she said weakly. âHeâs not interested.â
Lila pounced. âBut youâre interested in him .â
âYes, OK,â Rhi said reluctantly. âI do like him as more than a singing partner. But I donât think he feels the same way. And anywayâ¦â
I have other things to think about right now. She didnât say the words out loud. Her dadâs decision to move out was still too raw to share.
âAnyway what?â said Lila.
âNothing,â Rhi muttered. Her mood was sinking rapidly.
âRhi?â Eve put her hand on Rhiâs sleeve. âWe know about your dad.â
Rhi looked up, startled. âYou know what about my dad?â
âWe know heâs moved out,â said Lila. âWeâre really sorry.â
Rhi felt her mouth fall open. âBut ⦠how do you know that?â
Polly looked uncomfortable. âYou know Mum works at the estate agents? Your dad went into her office to ask about renting a flat last week. And ⦠you know. I go in his gallery a lot. We talk.â
Rhi couldnât take this in. âYou knew about my dad moving out before I did?â
âItâs a small town,â said Eve. She looked wry. âBelieve me, I know all about small towns.â
âAnd I know all about surviving divorces,â said Polly. âYouâre going to be fine, you know. Itâll be hard to begin with, but youâll get through it. I did.â
âBetween us, we have all the tools you need for coping,â said Eve.
âDonât be mad,â Lila said, watching Rhi anxiously. âWe just want you to know that weâre here for you. You know, if you need to talk.â
âWeâre here even if you donât want to talk,â Eve added. âTalking can be a drag sometimes.â
Polly gave Rhi a tight hug. âHow are you feeling?â she said, releasing her.
The only feeling Rhi could identify right now was gratitude. Wordlessly she held out her arms. Lila and Eve and Polly all crowded round her for a fierce group hug.
âIâm OK,â she said, when she released them. âFor now anyway.â
âGood,â said Lila with a nod. âThis calls for cake.â
âAnd ice cream,â Eve added.
âAnd sprinkles,â Polly said. âAnd cheesy music and some serious toenail painting.â
Rhi burst out laughing. âI love you guys.â
EIGHT
After only a few hoursâ sleep on Lilaâs floor, Rhi staggered outside into the Sunday morning sunshine. The others were still out cold, but Rhi had an appointment that she had no intention of missing.
She had brought her guitar with her to the sleepover. If sheâd had to go back home to fetch it, she had a nasty feeling her mother would have forbidden her from leaving the house again. An image of her revision notes lying
