wrong. It was fine at first, it just went downhill. Just do what you know; I’m sure it will get back to how it was.’
‘You’ve got the time, haven’t you? It’s only for a couple of weeks, then I go back to Spain and you go back to reviews.’
She had the time, even the inclination, but she didn’t think it was a good idea because she seriously wanted to jump him. And doing that meant it was a quick fling, classic rebound stuff, and she did not need to go down that route, whatever Kate said.
‘I do what I know and you can help sell me.’
    ‘You don’t need selling.’
He laughed: literally threw his head back so that she could see his long, lean, tanned throat, and laughed. And made bits of her she didn’t know about tighten up. ‘Sell my bar.’
‘All you need to do is go back to square one, like you had at the start.’
    ‘Like my brother had.’
‘Whatever. Go back to a proper pincho bar, forget the tapas dishes, have a counter that people can sit at and have a glass of decent Spanish wine and …’ He was looking at her intently; well, she could have sworn he was looking at her lips intently. Which made her want to cover them with her hand. ‘Some proper pinchos, spiced up, tasty, fresh. What? Stop staring at me like that.’
‘You have a very kissable mouth.’
‘And your sexy Spanish accent and smoothness isn’t cutting the mustard, stop it.’ Shit, it would be better if she wasn’t heating up like a furnace.
‘You find it sexy, eh?’ He raised an eyebrow and chuckled.
    ‘Stop it.’
‘I’m not sure I want to stop.’ His feet were brushing against hers again, and for some ridiculous reason it was making her feel shaky inside and out. Her whole body poised on the edge, waiting.
‘Well, I’m sure I want you to.’
‘Work for me, with me.’ He suddenly moved back, his ankles crossed under his own chair and his hands together on the table. Which left her feeling strangely cold and alone. ‘I’ll pay you and you can still do your reviews. Just a week or two, then we open and it’s all over.’
All over, he kept saying that. At least he was honest and upfront. Though she wasn’t quite sure if he wanted to shag her senseless as much as she wanted him to, or whether he was just flirting. But did it matter?
‘What about Danielle? Is she helping as well?’
‘Danielle?’ His brow wrinkled. ‘She’s busy getting ready to be a mother, in case you hadn’t noticed.’ His tone was dry and he looked irritated again.
    ‘I’d noticed, and you’re –’
‘I am not getting ready to be a papá .’
‘Oh.’ She pushed the last piece of pizza around on the plate. Spit it out, Ellie, just tell him. ‘It isn’t that easy though. My ex, the one I mentioned, he –’
Even if she’d being expecting it there wasn’t a lot she could have done. It just happened. Instantly. A splosh of cold water that hit her scalp with a blast, followed by a trickle of water and ice down her neck, finding its way with unerring precision straight between her boobs.
    ‘What the fuck?’
‘Lucas, you should be ashamed.’ The female voice, with a heavy Spanish accent went straight over her head, literally. And she was half glad she was only in the firing line as far as the water went, and not verbally. ‘What is it with you men; don’t you understand the meaning of discretion? Keeping your trousers on might be totally impossible, but you don’t come parading your hussies in here. People will see, people will talk, and then what will she think? It is her reputation, Lucas. Yours, pah, you men think your reputation is better if you share out your favours, but you are wrong. And what will your poor mamá think? Orlando comes here and waves it about and now you are doing it. Here, here of all places.’ She’d gone up a good octave and seemed to have reached the top of her range because there was suddenly silence. A big, empty, embarrassing silence.
Ellie didn’t know whether to laugh at
