anymore.”
“Fine,” he snapped, irritated with her once more. His feet were carrying him to the door as he uttered what could potentially be his last words to her. “Goodbye, Ella.”
“Oh, and, Jake,” she called after him, “the first thing I’m going to do when I get to New York is find a man who won’t hesitate to fuck me when I ask him to.”
It was a cruel taunt, meant to hurt, but he knew she was lying. As such, he refused to respond. Jaw clenched, he exited without another word.

Chapter Four

It was almost ten when she heard Jakob arrive home. Not that she was waiting up for him. She’d already gone through her nightly ritual of brushing her teeth, washing her face, moisturizing, and putting on her nightgown. She was in bed trying to go to sleep, but the tension of not knowing when he would come home had kept her awake. Briefly, she’d wondered if he would come home at all. The thought caused a painful tightening in her chest.
She heard him enter the bedroom. His steps slowed. “Shit, Sienna, I totally forgot that you go to bed early.”
She didn’t know how he knew she was awake since the lights were off and she was laying on her side facing away from the door. But she touched the lamp on the nightstand to her left. A circle of illumination surrounded her portion of the bed. Clutching the covers to her chest, she sat up and turned to face him. “That’s okay. I haven’t been able to sleep.”
Running his hand over his hair, he frowned. “Is the bakery open on Sundays?”
“Just for a few hours in the morning.”
He nodded. He looked around as though he were lost for a few moments. “Uh, I guess I’ll get ready for bed.” He went into the adjoining bathroom. Sienna settled back into bed and turned out the light. She listened as he brushed his teeth. He came out a few minutes later dressed in only pajama bottoms. Her heart thumped at the sight of him. Moonlight and a street light created enough brightness to allow her to see that he was all long, lean muscle. His shoulders were broad. His stomach was hard and flat. She’d seen him change his shirts courtside on television multiple times, but it wasn’t the same as having him there in the flesh in a bedroom with her. Sharing a bed with her. The thought of him being her husband, of being intimate with him, was enough to have her squeezing her thighs together. She reminded herself that that would never happen.
He slipped into bed. Since the bed was king sized, she’d have to extend her arm to its full-length to be able to touch him. She closed her eyes and tried to go to sleep.
“Sienna…would you…would you mind if…if I wanted to keep you as my wife?”
Her breath caught. “ What ?” Her voice came out as a croak. She cleared her throat and asked, “W-what do you mean?”
“Ella broke up with me tonight. She’s on her way home to New York.”
She turned on her light before rolling over so she could see him. He was on his back with his hands stacked behind his head. Her heart stopped and then thumped rapidly at the possibility of accepting his offer. But she couldn’t say yes. While she was glad to have the opportunity to have a real marriage, she didn’t want a husband who was pining away for another woman. He looked miserable and confused. She wouldn’t take advantage of his vulnerable state. If nothing else, she wanted to remain his friend at the end of their cohabitation period. That wouldn’t happen if she committed herself to their marriage only for him to leave her for Ella. But, oh, how she wanted to forget all about the other woman and say yes. “I’m sorry, Jakob.”
He sighed. “Don’t be. It never would have worked between us. I see that now. She wasn’t who I thought she was. Our goals, our morals, and our values are too disparate.”
“Did you have a fight?” she asked, trying to determine if their breakup was temporary.
    “Yes.”
She nodded. “Why don’t you give it a few days? I’m
