I’m not fucking anybody for the foreseeable future.”
“Oh, do please grow up! Promises mean nothing . They’re just words meant to placate the simple minded.”
He was too disgusted to look at her. He turned and headed for the door. “I keep my promises, but it’s good to know the value you place on your word.”
“ Jakob, stop it.” She caught up with him and grabbed his elbow. “What right do you have to be angry with me?”
He didn’t know if he was angry or disappointed. Obviously, he didn’t know her as well as he thought he did. “I need some time to cool off. I’ll call you tomorrow.”
She raced around in front of him and blocked the door. “ Jakob, you know I care about you, right?” Strangely enough, though they’d discussed marriage and living together, they’d never declared their love for one another.
    “I know.”
“Spend the night with me. Just tonight so that she knows-”
“I won’t hurt Sienna that way. I promised her that I would be faithful-”
“You care more about her feelings than mine!”
He dropped his face into his hands. Hell. He was in hell. Was there no way to prevent this from becoming ugly? He just wanted to go home, have a little peace and quiet and go to bed. The bed he would be sharing with Sienna. He hadn’t been stupid enough to tell Ella that particular detail. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“No, you want her. Bioexpa is never wrong.” She stormed off to the bedroom and he heard drawers opening and closing.
He moved t o the doorway to watch her tossing her clothing into a suitcase. “Ella, what are you doing?”
She shot him a quick glare. “I’d think it was pretty self-explanatory. This thing between you and me was never going to work. Clue one for me was when you wanted to move back here. The match between you and her was just the final nail in the coffin. I’m no one’s second choice!” She stomped to the closet and came back with an armful of her expensive shoes. “Even before this shit, I saw the way you watched her, but I knew you’d be faithful. And then when the two of you were matched . . . you’re probably not even aware of how happy you looked when you heard her name or how possessive you sound when you talk about her. You never look at me that way or talk about me that way. I’ve known since we got here that this wasn’t going to work.” She shook her head. “I’m going home to New York.”
“I thought that you understood and that you’d wait the thirty days for me,” he reminded her.
“Yeah, well, consider it a promise ,” she snarled at him.
He was so frustrated with her and the situation at the moment, he was tempted to throw his hands up in the air and just let her go. He might even offer her transportation to the airport. She was high strung and often lashed out impetuously and then lived to regret it. Maybe letting her cool her heels in New York was a good idea.
“Will you call me when you get there?”
“You’re not even going to try to stop me? Classic,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“I didn’t think there was anything I could say to stop you. And maybe some time away might make you feel better. You can shop and visit your family. And in a bit, you could-”
“Dream on.” She snapped the lid shut on her suitcase and zipped it up.
He watched silently as she lugged another bag from the closet and continued her furious packing pace. Sighing, he ran a hand over his hair. “I’m sorry that you feel that way, Ella. Call me if you change your mind.” She snorted . Jakob stood there waiting for her to acknowledge him in some way but she didn’t even look up. All the plans he’d made for the two of them were crashing and burning at his feet. He knew he should be feeling pain and regret, but at the moment, he only felt numb. Later he knew there would be sadness over the loss of a friendship. “I don’t want to part this way.”
“Tough. Just get out. I don’t want to look at your sad face
