didnât get accepted for the gift fair.â Zoey sighed again.
âWhat!â Marcus exclaimed. âWhy not?â
âTheyâre cutting back on clothing vendors, because clothes donât sell as well as other items,â Zoey said.
âThat stinks,â Marcus said. âHavenât you made a whole bunch of stuff for the fair already?â
âI have.â Zoey sighed a third time. âAnd now itâs all going to go to waste, unless . . . Wait! I know!â
Marcus stared at her, taking in the sudden transformation of her face from discouraged to cheerful.
âWhy do I sense that youâve had a sudden brainstorm?â he said.
âBecause I have!â Zoey laughed. âI found the silver lining. Since I already like the pieces I made for the gift fair, and theyâre relatively simple to make in different sizes, theyâll be perfect for Daphne Shawâs pop-up shop. Can you drive me to FedEx? I just need a few minutes to pack a box to send.â
âIf it helps turn your frown upside down, sure!â Marcus said. âHey, by the way, did you see the other thing that came in the mail?â
âWhat?â Zoey asked.
âWe got the invitation to Aunt Luluâs baby shower. And itâs addressed to you, me, Dad, and âguest.âââ
âWowâso . . . do you think the Mystery Lady is going to come?â Zoey asked. âWill we finally get to meet her?â
âThatâs what I plan to ask Dad tonight,â Marcus said.
When they posed the baby shower question to their father over dinner, he looked distinctly uncomfortable.
âLook, kids, I talked to her about meeting you, and sheâsjust not ready,â Dad said. âSo sheâs not coming to the baby shower.â
Marcus looked mutinous. âI just donât get it, Dad. What does she have against us?â
âI promise you, she has nothing against you,â Dad said. âYouâll understand when you meet her, I promise.â
But Zoey and Marcus werenât so easily convinced. After dinner, Marcus joined Zoey in her room to complain about the situation.
âIâm starting to think thereâs something weird about this lady,â he said. âWhy else would she be so afraid of meeting us?â
âI know! Weâre not that scary,â Zoey said. âWell, maybe you are, but Iâm not!â
âIâm not sure I want things to work out between them anymore,â Marcus said. âIâm worried that sheâs strange or cold or something.â
âMe too,â Zoey said. âExcept . . . Dad still seems really happy every time he gets back from a date with her. So . . . thereâs that.â
Marcus sighed. âYeah, thereâs that. And itâs a pretty big that.â
âI guess we have to be patient, like Dad says,â Zoey said.
âTrue,â Marcus agreed. âBut that doesnât mean we have to like it!â
Later that evening, Aunt Lulu called to speak to Zoey.
âDid you get the invitation to the baby shower?â her aunt asked.
âYes,â Zoey said. âItâs really cute.â
âZo, I need your help. Iâve been looking for a simple, but cute, outfit to wear for the shower, but everything Iâve seen and tried on so far just makes me look big and dowdy,â Aunt Lulu complained. âCan you rescue me from mom-to-be madness and design me something stylish?â
âI guess . . . ,â Zoey said. âI mean, Iâll try. Itâs just . . . I have no idea how to make maternity clothes. Iâm not sure how much room Iâm supposed to leave for the bump.â
âI donât want you to stress about it,â Aunt Lulu said. âIâll buy another dress as backup, just in case. But I love your designs, and I trust you to createsomething that wonât
