suspended!â
I groaned. Of course the school would send an email letting my mother know about my suspension.
âYou got suspended, Maya?â My mother waved the letter like she simply couldnât believe it. âFor fighting? Like some common thug?â
âI was defending myself after I was attacked,â I said.âShay Turner jumped me.â
She tossed the paper on my dresser and darted toward me.
âOh my God, you were jumped? Why in the world do I have you in that expensive private school if you have to worry about getting attacked?â She studied my face like she was checking for bruises. âI just canât believe this. Why didnât you tell me?â
âI didnât want to worry you or dad.â I took a deep breath and acted like I was fighting back tears. âIt was just so horrible.â
Dang, I was good. I donât know why Hollywood was sleeping on me.
My mother stroked my hair. âMy poor baby. Are you okay?â She pulled back and started examining my face some more.
âIâm fine. Just a little bruised up.â
âDo we need to call the doctor?â She turned my cheek, studying me closer.
âI . . . I just couldnât believe that happened and I didnât want to tell you and get you upset.â
âThis is just ridiculous.â She paused like she was thinking. âI knew this would happen when they decided to let those people go to that school.â
I hated to bust her bubble, but I said, âIt wasnât one of the scholarship kids. It was Shay Turner.â
âWait a minute. Shay Turner. Is that the girl from the show with you?â
I nodded. âYeah, the one from Miami Divas . She was mad because she got fired and they kept me.â My parents had been completely behind by new job. My dadâs attorney was the one who had worked out all the details in my contract. But none of them knew how upset my former crew was about being fired.
âJalen Turnerâs daughter?â my mom asked.
âYes.â
Her mouth dropped open. âOh, I donât think so,â she exclaimed. âI never did like that olâ tattooed-up gangsta. Thatâs what happens when common folks come into money, they donât know how to act. That thug and his ghetto daughter have messed with the wrong womanâs child!â she continued.
My mother had made no secret that while she had no problem with the other members of the whole Miami Divas crew, she had never been feeling Shay. Even though Mr. Turner was one of the most talented players in the NBA, he was always getting in some kind of trouble.
âThatâs what I told them, Mom,â I said, egging her on. If she was mad at them, she wouldnât be trippinâ with me. âI told them I donât fight, I sue.â
My mother patted my cheek. âI taught you well, sweetheart.â She stood up tall and brushed down her skimpy tennis skirt. âIâm going to talk to your father. Weâre going to have Daniel get right on this,â she said, referring to our family attorney.
I smiled appreciatively. âThanks, Mom. And donât worry, Tamara is supposed to be looking at getting me a bodyguard.â I made a mental note to call her tomorrow to ask her the status on that. I knew the bodyguard wouldnât be allowed at school (Baliâs dad had tried to get him a bodyguard once and the school nixed it), but I still wanted one for when I wasnât at school.
I knew my dad would take it over from here, but at least Iâd gotten my mom off my back for a while. âWell, Iâm just sitting here trying to study so I donât fall behind on any of my work,â I said, motioning toward my laptop.
My mother stood and smiled. âThatâs my baby. Let me let you get back to work. Iâll go tell Sui to fix you your favorite food for dinner to make you feel better.â
âAll right,
