from?â
Jewel got in between them. âHey!â she said, jabbing her wing tip at Eduardo. âBack off!â She gave him a push that caught him off guard.
âHey! Excuse me, young lady,â Eduardo said.
Jewel stared into his eyes and gasped. Her expression softened. Could it be?
âI canât believe it,â she said.
âHow . . . how . . . how is this . . . ?â Eduardo started.
âI donât know,â Jewel said, at a loss.
âIâve looked everywhere for you!â Eduardo burst out.
Jewel rushed out the words. âWhen the humans cameââ
âI had you under my wing and then you wereââ
âGone!â Jewel finished. âIâm here!â Jewel cried, rushing into his arms. âDaddy!â
Blu gaped at the sight of his wife and Eduardo embracing. âDaddy?â
âI missed you,â Jewel cried.
âItâs okay,â Eduardo soothed. âItâs okay now. Daddy has you.â
Suddenly the birds were all aflutter. Everyone was hugging and laughing through tears of joy.
Eduardo pulled back to stare at Jewel. âLook at you. . . . Itâs my little girl, all grown up. Youâre so beautiful . . . just like your mother.â
At the word âmother,â Jewel looked hopefully into her fatherâs eyes. The look he gave her back told her all she needed to know. Her mother was gone. Her head drooped in sadness as Eduardo hugged her close, stroking the back of her head.
âI am so sorry. I am so sorry I lost you. I canât imagine you alone this whole time,â Eduardo told his daughter, holding her at wingâs length.
Jewel took a big, gulping breath. âItâs okay, Dad,â she said. âI wasnât alone. Blu found me.â
From the side, Blu shuffled nervously forward. His talons played uneasily with his fanny pack. He wanted to make a good impression. âSure is nice to meet you, sir.â He offered his father-in-law his wing.
But Eduardo wouldnât take it. âTuck that wing away, Stu. â
Blu did as he was asked, afraid he had offended the chief.
âNow come here,â Eduardo insisted, and Blu inched forward. âCloser.â
âOh, really . . .â This felt close enough to Blu.
âCloser,â Eduardo urged. âYou brought my Jewel back to me, I thank you.â The two male birds were eye to eye. âIâm going to hug you now.â
âOh, uh, okay . . . should I just . . . ?â Blu awkwardly tried to hug Jewelâs father when suddenly Eduardo embraced him.
âNow come here, Stu!â
Blu could hardly breathe as he tried to hug the older bird back. âOkay, there we are . . . my pleasure.â
âNico, you crying?â Pedro asked.
The little bird hiccupped. âItâs a heavy moment and Iâm very vulnerable right now.â
âCome here, let me get you a hug,â Pedro said, crying along with him.
Jewel wiped away a tear of joy as Bia flew to her. âMom, are you okay?â
âYeah, baby,â Jewel said.
Eduardoâs eyes widened. ââMomâ? Iâm a grandpa? Iâm a grandpa.â He dropped Blu from the hug.
âOw!â Blu yelped.
âLook at me!â Eduardo called out. âIâm a grandpa!â
âDaddy, this is Carla, Bia, and Tiago.â
âNice to meet you, sir,â Bia said politely.
Eduardo chuckled. âThereâs no âsirâ around here, young lady. You will call me Pop-Pop.â And he wrapped all three kids up in a hug.
âPop-Pop! Oooh, I like that. Itâs got a nice ring to it!â Carla said.
Eduardo danced around with the kids, singing and laughing. âKids, go easy on old Pop-Pop,â Blu cautioned from the sidelines.
Eduardo stopped suddenly and turned to Blu. âYou can call me sir.â Then he went back to hugging the
