make a mistake.â
âWhat kind of mistake?â he asked.
She shook her head. âNothing. So how about nine-thirty for breakfast tomorrow?â
âSure. But Iâm not letting you change the subject,â he said.
She bit her lower lip. âI just want to make sure we both know what we are doing.â
âI do,â he assured her. He took her hand in his and led her back out into the lobby. It was odd to think of the passionate embrace theyâd shared happening so close to the real world and strangers.
âYou sound confident but there are things you donât know, Cam,â she said.
âThen tell me about them,â he invited. âI want to know everything this time, Becca. No halfway for us.â
âIâm not ready to talk about all my secrets,â she said.
âIâm not going anywhere, so when you are ready wewill talk. There are things that take time to find their way out,â he said.
âDo you have secrets?â she asked, then shook her head wryly. âOf course you do. You are a complex man.â
âAm I? I think Iâm a simple man with simple needs.â
âAnd what are they?â she asked as they approached the front door of the hotel.
âRight now, they involve you in my arms. But thatâs not happening tonight.â
âSo what are you going to do?â
âI think Iâll go to my room and pour myself a drink.â
âDrinking is never the solution,â she said.
âI know that, but it will take the edge off my wanting you.â
âDoes that really work?â she asked.
âI have no idea, but Iâm going to give it a try,â he said.
She turned and then leaned up and kissed him really quickly. Just a brief touch that sent sparks through his already aroused body.
âThank you.â
âFor?â
âStopping and not pressuring me. It would have been very easy for you to change my mind,â she admitted.
He knew that, but he wasnât going to say it out loud. âI want more than one night with you, Becca.â
She tipped her head to the side to study him. âI hope so. Iâm not that temporary woman I was back then.â
âI can see that. I hope you will learn that Iâm a different man, too. Iâm ready to settle down with the right woman,â he admitted.
âIâm not sure Iâm that person,â she said.
âNo pressure. I just wanted to let you know that Iâve changed, as well.â
âI could tell right away. No BlackBerry in your hand during dinner,â she said.
âWith you by my side Iâm not focused on work as much as pleasure.â
She flushed. âYou are very good about pleasure.â
âThank you.â He kissed her hard and deep. âSee you in the morning.â
She nodded and walked to the car. He watched until the car drove away and then turned and headed back upstairs. He needed to know more about Becca but he had to be careful. He didnât want to be the man to hurt herâ¦again.
Four
B ecca woke early, as she always had since becoming a mom. She fed Ty his breakfast and then set him in his playpen while she checked her email. Last night sheâd managed maybe two hours of sleep. Her dreams had been plagued with visions of Cam. The dreams were an odd mix of passionate embraces and tearful explanations. And today she felt very apprehensive about inviting him to her house for breakfast.
But it was too late. Cam and she had too much between them for her to just let him walk out of her life this time. And she couldnât move forward until he knew about Ty. It was going to be hardâ¦how did you tell a man that heâd fathered a child with you nearly two years earlier?
She hoped heâd be accepting and understand whyshe hadnât contacted him earlier, but she wasnât too confident of that.
The paternity suit heâd mentioned yesterday bothered her.
