sprang from Jonasâs fancy convertible and access to his daett âs money. This was a personal weakness she was well aware of and must one day overcome. But she hadnât expected loveâ if this was love.
âWhat is it?â Mamm âs voice cut through her thoughts.
âShirleyâs in love with Jonas Beachy.â Miriam wasted no time getting to the heart of the matter, as usual.
âJonas Beachy!â Mamm âs voice was filled with horror.
âItâs not that bad,â Shirley protested. â I didnât say I was in love with him.â And yet perhaps she was. There was something special about Jonas. He had a confident air about him that she liked. And, she had to admit it, there was the wealth factor.
âBut Jonas isnât Amish!â Mamm exclaimed.
âI told Miriam about Jonas so she could help me decide what to do. I made a mistake. I should have kept quiet. Iâm not ready to talk about him.â
Mamm stared at Shirley. âPerhaps weâd better start at the beginning.â
Miriam looked away. âShirley can tell the story.â
Shirley took a deep breath. This wouldnât be easy.
âShirley!â Mamm âs voice was impatient. âTell me.â
Shirley forced the words out. âOkay! Iâve met Jonas the past several Tuesdays in Berlin. Weâve talked, thatâs allâwell, mostly all. Iâve taken a few rides in his car. Now he wants to see me at home.â Shirley held up her hand. âBut I said no, Mamm .â
âExactly how long has this been going on?â Mamm âs voice was subdued.
Shirley bit her lip. âFor a month or so. Iâm sorry, Mamm . Thatâs why I finally told Miriam.â
âBut you didnât come to me,â Mamm said softly.
âIâm sorry.â Shirley hung her head.
âItâs the money, isnât it?â Mamm said.
âSheâs in love,â Miriam spoke up. âIt must be more than just money.â
Mamm shook her head. â Nee , itâs his access to money. Why is it always the money? Truly the love of money is the root of all evil, just as the Bible says.â Mamm wrung her hands. âI will not lose a daughter over money!â Mamm turned to face Shirley. âYou must know that man will never make you happy.â
âHeâs not just âthat manâ!â Shirley wished at once she hadnât said the words. Defending Jonas revealed the affection that lay in her heartâa greater affection than even she dared admit.
Sorrow crept over Mamm âs face. âSo you are in love with the man.â
It was more statement than question, so Shirley kept silent.
The sound of buggy wheels turning into the driveway ended the discussion. Mamm slowly rose to her feet. âThat will be the kinner home from school. Weâll speak more on this tonight when Daett is home.â
Shirley groaned silently. Daett would probably insist she never see Jonas again.
Miriam welcomed the four scholars homeâNaomi, Aaron, Dana, and Elizabeth. âHow did school go today, Elizabeth?â she asked cheerily, greeting the first child through the door.
First-grader Elizabethâs face glowed. âI got to read my first word today. All by myself!â
âThatâs wonderful!â Miriam exclaimed.
Shirley forced herself to join the happy conversations. The last thing she wanted was for the younger children to find out what sheâd done. She didnât want to be a bad example for them. Sheâd have to keep her interest in Jonas a secret from younger ears. Oh oh. Already thoughts of Jonas and his fancy Englisha car were dancing in her mind again. She hurried into the kitchen. Thankfully no one but Mamm seemed to notice her abrupt departure. Sheâd gotten herself together by the time eighth-grader Naomi followed her and asked, âWhatâs for supper tonight?â
