Especially the way Burt had done, leaving marks.
“Listen, we have invested a lot of money in your product. I believe in it and it’s now time for the rest of the nation to believe in it. Burt is a little on edge because it’s the most money we have spent on a campaign.” Fear, stark and vivid, set in her eyes. “Ever.”
She quietly turned and walked out.
One thing was for sure; I didn’t have a good feeling about Burt Rossen. There was something about him that was off and it wasn’t the fact he had just grabbed his wife who had obviously taken good care of him, but something I wasn’t able to put my finger on. And I knew to keep a watchful eye on him.
I took Madame Torres out of my bag and sat her down on the desk.
“That was something.” Her face appeared in the full globe. Her lips blood red, purple turban on top of her head, and green eye shadow across her eyelids. Her head swung around the ball. “I don’t have a good feeling about this place.”
I put my kit on top of the desk and opened it. My body felt weak. Almost helpless, but I knew there was a limited amount of time to get this place cleansed.
“Me either.” My chest heaved with breathlessness. It took all my energy to pull the smudge stick out of the kit and I quickly put it back when the door opened.
Mr. Prince Charming darted in, Josh closely following.
“You settling in?” Josh walked in and looked around the room. “Nice digs.”
“I thought so.” My lips thinned as I watched his eyes zero in on the kit. I closed it and slipped it underneath the desk.
“Nice snow globe.” He picked up Madame Torres and shook it.
“Please don’t touch my stuff.” I grabbed her out of his hands and held her close to my body. “Is there something I can help you with?”
“Nope. Just showing your cat where you were.” His voice held suspicion. “I guess you got a good idea of how things work around here.”
“I’m not sure what you are talking about.” I channeled my energy into my gut, but my only problem was that I was exhausted from socking Burt in the gut with my mind. I eased down into the desk chair. My energy was zapped. There had to be some sort of quick recovery from the magic I had just done and I was going to have to figure out what that was.
“Ma’am.” A security guard stood at the door. Josh and I both looked up. “Mr. Rossen asked me to escort you out of the building since your new start date is tomorrow.”
Gladly. I grabbed my kit and stuck Madame Torres back in my bag.
“Let’s go,” I told Mr. Prince Charming.
Chapter Six
“Well, that was a quick day of work.” Faith was ringing up a couple of customers at A Charming Cure.
As soon as Burt told me on my way out the door that there was no reason for me to start today since the new packaging was going to start in the morning and the meetings we had on the schedule were postponed until then, I decided to come back to Whispering Falls. I could check on the shop, think about the wedding plans. . .think, and be at Eloise’s on time for dinner.
“They packaged the wrong bottles.” I shook my head and peeled my cloak from around my shoulders and put it on the coat rack next to the door. “I see some of the inventory has moved.”
The shelves on the wall were refilled as I had asked her to, but the labels weren’t facing forward the way I liked. On my way back to the register I went down the shelves and turned the bottles facing forward and arranged a few of the ones sitting on the table displays.
“Hi there.” I greeted a woman standing in front of the sleeping aid display. A top seller for the shop. Her soft blond hair was pulled back at the nape of her neck in a loose bun. I didn’t have to tap into my intuition to know she wasn’t sleeping, the black circles under her pale, thin skin told me. But there was more to it and that was what my intuition told me. “Are you having trouble sleeping?” I asked.
Asking was the only way I was
