hip-hop.
I finish off my second drink, slap another twenty on the countertop, and order another as he catches my eye.
The man is very tall, his skin the color of a rich caramel, and he is incredibly handsome. The black strands of his hair are cut short and are neatly tousled. He has a trim beard perfectly manicured across his cheeks. His gorgeous chocolate eyes undress me as he strolls closer. His walk is prideful, and his resolve is clear. He wants me and will stop at nothing to have me. He is exactly what I need right now.
As he steps within a couple feet of me, I can smell his earthy cologne. I’m swarmed by need as the stranger finally sits next to me.
“All right, ladies and gentlemen,” the DJ’s voice comes through the sound system. “Here’s an R&B classic to heat things up.”
“Untitled (How Does It Feel)” by D’Angelo starts playing over the speakers. The dance floor is swarmed by couples latching onto each other and moving to the music.
“Dance with me?” the sexy man asks, his voice as sultry as his Latin good looks.
I hold my hand out, and he helps me from my chair. We say nothing as he ushers us to the dance floor, finding a spot in the middle of the sea of sexually charged bodies. I wrap my arms around his neck, pressing my chest into his firm, lean one. The swarthy stranger holds me tightly with one hand on my hip and the other wrapped around my waist, resting on the small of my back. I melt from the heat generated off his hands through the fabric of my dress.
Our steps are slow as we move to the beat of the music. My eyes are closed, and I am completely absorbed in this stranger’s heat and the sexy lyrics of the song. This is exactly what I was looking for when I came here—complete and total oblivion.
The song hasn’t even played thirty seconds before my peace is interrupted. I sense his presence before I see him. I feel a frigid stare on me, and there is a distinct aroma surrounding me, one mixed with a familiar spicy cologne and natural, intoxicating scent that can only belong to one person. I don’t need to open my eyes to know who is standing near me, watching me.
I pretend to ignore him, hoping he will just go away. I know it’s a long shot, but a girl can hope, can’t she?
“You’ve made your point. Let’s go.” Nikolai’s voice is quiet and lethal.
The man I’m dancing with turns to the side, getting a look at who is behind him as I open my eyes.
Nikolai doesn’t acknowledge him, only keeps his glare on me.
“I’m not ready to leave,” I snap back, trying to turn my back on him.
“You know this guy?” the confused stranger asks through clenched teeth as we keep dancing slowly in a circle. His fists are balled up on my hips.
    “Unfortunately,” I huff out.
Nikolai steps to the side and pulls me back. With one deft movement, he has spun me around and detached me from the guy.
My arm throbs where his grasp digs into my upper arm. I try jerking my elbow back, but Nikolai’s grip is too tight.
I look over at him and shiver. Just like the night we had sex, he looks exasperated, and I sense he’s going to do something rash. I highly doubt it will end in the same result as it did then.
“Hey!” the stranger shouts then grabs ahold of Nikolai’s arm. “She’s with me. Get the fuck out of here.”
My buzz disintegrates instantly as the tension sends rockets between the three of us. I can feel the pressure in Nikolai’s grip tighten. I’m familiar with the look in his eye. It’s the same look he gave Gary before he snapped his neck and when we first met: cold, evil, and without caution.
The song is still playing through the speakers when I place myself between the two men. Nikolai lets go of my arm, and I keep my back pressed into his chest. It feels like it’s resting against a stone wall. I don’t move. I keep my feet planted and brace myself to play defense if needed.
“Look,” I say. I hold my hand, alerting the stranger to stop. “This is
