had the sense to know it was, therefore, more dangerous in some ways than the more easily recognized sources of power. It was always simpler to deal with a factor that could be labeled and understood.
But for some reason, although she was warily respectful of the potential danger in him, Honor didn't fear Conn. That knowledge gave her the poise to smile warmly at him.
Landry saw the confidence in her and told himself he was amused. Yet a part of him knew a sense of reluctant admiration. The lady had guts. Having just recently finished with a rather blunt heart-to-heart chat with Granger, he now knew just how much nerve she must have buried beneath that bright, stylish exterior.
She was wearing a yellow-gold chemise that was sashed low on the hips with a crisp, wide band of black. The effect was both rakish and self-confident without being outrageous. The black sandals and the ebony bracelet on her small wrist completed the outfit. Her hair swung in a sleek curtain around her shoulders and as he stood there on the threshold, Landry had an almost overpowering urge to run his fingers through the golden-brown stuff. He wanted to touch her with the familiar intimacy of a lover.
She'd look good a little mussed from his touch, he decided.
Once again he realized he should be questioning his own reactions. It was reasonably safe to admit he found himself responding physically to Honor. Conn decided that he understood that part and could deal with it. But it definitely was not on the program to uncover this vein of whimsically indulgent tenderness.
"The desk clerk at my hotel recommended a little restaurant downtown," Landry said as he walked her toward the silver-gray Porsche that waited at the curb. He told her the name. "Know it?"
Honor nodded. "It's an excellent choice." She allowed him to slip her into the front seat and then had to wait impatiently while he circled the front of the car and slid in beside her. "Well?" she invited cheerfully.
"When are you going to tell me all the details?"
His promised phone call that afternoon had been brief, disappointingly so, Honor had discovered after she'd replaced the receiver. Landry had only asked for her home address and then said quite calmly that Granger was no longer a problem. He'd refused to tell her more at that point.
"I'll give you the full story over dinner," Landry promised now as he pulled away from the curb. The quiet, tree-lined streets near the California Institute of Technology campus were relatively empty at this hour, and he made his way through them with an ease that told Honor he didn't need directions.
She wondered briefly how he happened to be so familiar with the Pasadena streets, and then promptly forgot the matter as her mind went back to Granger.
"He really is out of the way, though?"
"He won't bother you or your sister again."
Her head snapped around. "How did you know about my sister's involvement in all this?"
"I'll tell you that over dinner, too." He threw her a sidelong glance. "Relax, Honor. I've taken care of everything."

Some of her breezy confidence faded. " You've taken care of everything? I thought it was the police who had handled Granger."
"Whether or not they do doesn't affect you anymore."
"Do you know, Conn Landry, you have a remarkable talent for the cryptic comment?"
"Since my talents are rather limited, I try to perfect the few I have."
"I get the feeling your sense of humor may not be numbered among your few perfected abilities."
"Probably not," he admitted without any show of concern.
"Pity," she said dryly, trying to sound just as cryptic as Conn.
Driving ability was, apparently, one of his limited number of talents, Honor observed as he parked the Porsche with neat precision in front of the casually elegant little restaurant. When Conn opened her car door and took her arm to escort her across the sidewalk she decided that he had another talent: He had the ability to make her feel safe.
It was an odd sensation on her
