school.â She drew a deep breath. âBut Iâll know better next time.â She headed for the elevator. âWe have to get back to Eve. I mentioned her name. He might try toââ
Joe was already ahead of her, his finger pressing the button. âI doubt if he could bounce back that fast, but we wonât take a chance. We have to get out of here.â
âI shouldnât have mentioned her. He just seemedâHurry!â
Two minutes later they were at the door of Eveâs hospital room.
No Eve.
Cara stopped short, her gaze on the rumpled bed. âNo,â she whispered.
âI didnât expect you this soon. All done with the paperwork?â
Cara turned to see Eve standing in the doorway of the bathroom. She felt limp with relief. âHi. I thoughtââ She swallowed. âI was scared. I did something stupid.â
Eveâs gaze narrowed on her face. âI can see youâre scared.â She looked at Joe. âWhat happened?â
âShe ran into a wolf in sheepâs clothing,â Joe said. âI left her for a minute in the hall outside the administration office, and he pounced.â
âSalazar?â
Joe nodded. âHe recruited a young kid who was very good. Smooth as silk and very believable.â
âA kid?â Margaret came out of the bathroom carrying three plastic bags filled with Eveâs personal items. âThat doesnât sound like a recruit to replace Walsh.â
âHe was good,â Joe repeated. âAnd clever. Salazar might be trying something new. Walsh had to have been a miserable failure in his eyes.â
âHe was a miserable failure in anyoneâs eyes.â Eve shivered. âBut I didnât think that Salazar would have found out that Walsh was dead yet. Much less send a killer to replace him.â
âHe probably had someone watching Walsh and reporting back to him. I doubt if he would have trusted him after heâd failed him all these years.â
âDo you know his name?â
âKevin Roper. At least, thatâs what he told us. Iâll check with Manez, my contact in Mexico who deals with the cartels, to see if I can verify.â Joe glanced quickly around the room. âHave you got everything? We need to get out of here.â
âThese were the last items.â Margaret went to Eveâs bag, which sheâd set on the floor on the other side of the bed. âSheâs ready to go.â She looked back at him. âWhere are you going to take her?â
âWeâre going home,â Eve said. âI told you, Margaret.â
âI thought there might be a change of plan.â She fastened the suitcase. âSince Iâm sure Salazar knows where you live.â
âSo am I,â Joe said. âBut itâs my home territory. Easier to defend. We canât hide out here with Cara like she did with Elena. I know the police there, and I have friends.â
âYou wonât be hiding at all,â Margaret said soberly. âI know something about hiding. It seems like Iâve done it all my life. You should disappear until youâre ready to make your move against Salazar.â She glanced at Cara. âYou know all about disappearing, donât you? They donât want to make you feel unsafe, they want to put you in a nice, cozy place. But sometimes those cozy places can be traps, and you have to leave them. Thereâs no choice. Your Elena knew that, didnât she?â
Cara nodded. âShe knew. She was trying to take me away again when Walsh ⦠killed her.â
âWeâll take care of her, Margaret,â Eve said quietly. âI know you mean well, but sheâs our responsibility.â
âAnd I should butt out?â Margaret shrugged. âI take it that you havenât changed your mind about letting me come with you?â She didnât wait for an answer but turned back to Cara.
