the need to warn you about leaving the toilet seat up.â
âAs long as weâre goinâ with clichés, Iâll warn you not to use my razor.â
Jadeâs thoughtful gaze roved over his face. âDoesnât look like you have much use for a razor anyway.â
He scratched his cheek. âJust not today. I wasnât aware weâd be expecting guests. Did she know you were coming?â
âYes. She didnât tell you I was on my way here?â
âNope. How long are you staying?â
âDepends.â
âOn?â he prompted.
âThis and that.â
He eyed her electronics. âYou donât have a job to go back to?â
âNot a full-time career-type job.â
âGot a boyfriend pining away for you?â he asked, suspecting a woman with her type of delicate beauty wouldnât be single.
âNot one of those either.â She paused. âHow about you?â
âNo boyfriend for me. Or girlfriend for that matter.â
Jade laughed. âI was going to say the same thing.â
âWhat are your plans while youâre here?â
âWhatâs with the twenty questions? Are you afraid Iâll be boxing up the crystal and the silver personally so I know that you donât abscond with it?â
He grinned, appreciating that her quick wit hadnât masked her antagonism. Itâd be interesting to see how hard heâd have to poke her buttons before that sharp tongue took over. âIâd be asking Miz G before you move stuff around here. Sheâs particular about her things. It probably looks like chaos. But trust me; she knows
exactly
where everything is in this house. But if you donât believe me? Knock yourself out. See how lovey-dovey she is with you after she catches you messinâ in her china cabinet or her kitchen.â
Jade sipped her tea. âSpeaking of the kitchen. She made you lunch today, but do you cook for her?â
âNope. I buy the groceries.â
âSo you do the dishes and clean up after she cooks for you?â
He shrugged. âI hang out with her in the kitchen while sheâs cooking and cleaning up. She asks me to chop veggies, Iâll do it. She asks me to scrub a fry pan, Iâll do it. Itâs not like Iâve got a defined list of chores.â
She made a face but didnât respond.
Tobin rested his forearms on his knees and leaned forward. âWhatâs put that wrinkle in your brow, darlinâ?â
âDonât
darlinâ
me,â she warned. âIâm not so easily swayed by sweet-talking cowboys.â
âBeen around a lot of
gen-u-wine
cowboys in New York City, have you?â
âSadly, no, but thatâs beside the point. Iâve only been here a few hours and Iâve already seen you use those sweet-talking ways on GG. So what has she promised you in exchange for your protection?â
Tobin knew his eyes had turned frosty, but he kept his tone even. âShe did mention something about giving me forty acres and a mule.â When he realized Jade didnât get the reference, he backtracked. âWhy are you so damn suspicious of me?â
âSeriously? Youâre a good-looking, unmarried cowboy who has moved into my grandmotherâs house and taken on the role of her protector. You canât see why my dad would have a problem with that?â
âThen your dad oughta nut up and confront me about it in person.â
The screen door banged open. Garnet strolled onto the porch, yawning. âGuess I needed that nap. Thatâs where toddlers and old-timers are alike; we donât want to nap, but if we donât weâre cranky-pants the rest of the day.â She squinted and her gaze flitted between him and Jade. âWhatâs going on? Looks like you two were having words.â
âWe were talking,â Jade said.
Tobin snorted. âCall it what it is, darlinâ; we were
