arguing. Jade was trying to act all cute and charming, but I didnât buy any of it.â
âJade? Charming?â Garnet slapped her leg with amusement. âOh,sonny. Thatâs a good one. Jade is as cute as a bug in a rug, but sheâs so shy she failed charm school twice, didnât you, sweetie?â
âGG!â
âYou failed twice? Now that Iâd believe,â Tobin drawled.
Miz G poked his arm. âYour charm doesnât work as well as you think, or else youâd already have hooked yourself a girlfriend or a wife, wouldnât you?â
Jesus.
Heâd forgotten about Garnetâs equal-opportunity blunt streak.
âThatâs probably because he argues about everything,â Jade said.
âThe hell I do. I argue when itâs warranted.â
âI donât like arguing in any way, shape or form,â Garnet said.
âThen weâll stop,â Tobin said. âItâll be easier for some of us than others.â
âYes, itâll be very easy for
him
to stop,â Jade said sweetly, âsince he wasnât winning anyway.â
âHard to get my point across when Iâm beinâ accused of everything from freeloading, to having undue influence, to expecting payment for my services.â
âI never said any of that,â she said hotly.
âBut you sure were thinking it, werenât you, darlinâ?â
âOh, so youâre a mind reader now too?â Jade leaned forward. âTell me what Iâm thinking right now.â
Tobin clucked his tongue. âMiz G doesnât like to hear that kind of foul language, Jade. As her
only
granddaughter, you should already know that.â
âOmigod. You are the most infuriating man Iâve ever met.â
âAnd Iâm considered a nice guy around these parts.â
âNot exactly a badge of honor when the population around these parts is like . . . ten,â she retorted, âand half of them are animals.â
âIf there arenât enough people around to suit your needs, why donât you trot your little self on home to New York City?â
âBecause I like it here. Present company excluded. So suck it up, cowboy. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âRight.â He smirked. âBet you donât last half a day,
cupcake
, when I tell you the nearest Starbucks is in Laramie . . . eighty miles away.â
âEnough!â
They looked at Garnet and then each other. How had they forgotten she was here?
Garnet said. âZip it, both of you, and listen up. Iâd hoped I was wrong but I can see that itâs worse than I imagined.â She pointed at Jade. âI donât care what you said to Tobin in the kitchen earlier that had him scurrying off, but it was more than just a little tiff to get that man to forgo lunch.â She focused on Tobin. âAnd Iâve no doubt you were equally at fault by goading her into it.â
âMe?â Tobin said innocently.
Jade whispered, âWhy donât you just
nut up
and admit it?â
Miz G said nothing to
her
about her snarky comment. How was that fair?
Jesus. How old are you? Nine?
âI wonât listen to this kind of grade-school bickering. Iâm too damn old. Iâll state the obvious. You two are oil and water. You have nothing in common. Youâll be at each otherâs throats at every opportunity, so I simply wonât allow them kind of opportunities.â She paused, her steely-eyed stare moving back and forth between them. âDo you understand what Iâm saying? You two will steer clear of each other at all times for the duration of your stay with meâhowever long thatâll be.â
âHow are we supposed to âsteer clearâ of each other, GG?â Jade demanded.
âYeah. Weâre sharing a house, a bathroom and . . . time with you, Miz G.â
Jade muttered,
