away.
âYou are still upset about that kiss, arenât you?â
âSort of.â
Todd is evasive. Papa Dean will not let Todd escape telling him about his anxiety. âWhy does the kiss bother you this much? It just looked like the two of you were having some fun.â
Toddâs eyes darken. âIt may have looked like fun to you, but as sure as Hadrian was gay, it didnât look that way to Anthony.â
âAh, Anthony.â
âYeah, Frankâs boyfriend. How could Frank kiss me like that in front of him? Thatâs the way you kiss your boyfriend! Not your best friend.â
âSo, youâre worried about Anthonyâs feelings, then?â Dean is not convinced.
âYesâno.â Todd knows better than to lie to Dean. Papa Dean always has a way of wriggling the truth out of him. âIâm worried about all the hateful rumors heâs going to spread when we go back to school.â
Papa Dean is concerned. âDoes this happen a lot?â
âEvery time Frank does something stupid like that in front of one of his boyfriends.â Exasperated, Todd says, âEverybody he has ever dated hates me! And they have all called me horrible names behind my back. Last year, Iggy told everyone I was a strai .â
âA strai ?â Dean asks, angered. âI hate that word! Itâs so derogatory. Itâs no oneâs fault if heâs born straight. Heâs to be pitied, not mocked.â
âAnd then,â Todd barges on to avoid discussing Iggyâs accusation, âFrank avoided me for six weeks because Iggy made him choose between him and me. The same thing is going to happen with Anthony; I just know it!â
Although sensitive about the topic, Dean will not let Todd pass over such a volatile accusation. âWhoa, back up, son. Have his boyfriends accused you of being straight?â
âIggy told everyone I was a strai âa cuâcuntâhammerâ.â Todd closes his eyes, trying not to cry. âAnd heâs not the only one. Just about every boy Frankâs ever dated has said that about me.â Shaking his head in disbelief, he adds, âThey never say it to my face, of course, but Crystal tells me everything.â
âIs Frank aware of this?â
Todd shrugs.
âI plan to ask him,â Dean says.
Todd opens his eyes, fear evident. âPlease, Papa Deanâno.â He sighs. âItâs going to be strained enough between Frank and me as it is. After heâs done talking to Anthony, Iâm willing to bet you wonât be seeing me around here for a good monthâat the very least.â Looking down at his feet, Todd concludes, âAnthony is not the type to put up with competition.â
Dean turns grim. âThat explains all those times youâve been absent from our house the past few years.â He shakes his head. âThat is not to happen anymore.â Lifting Toddâs chin to look at him, Dean says, âI promised your father Iâd keep an eye on you. How can I do that if youâre avoiding my house? Promise me youâll come over at least once a week.â
âButâ,â Todd stutters.
âNo buts.â Papa Dean is stern. âSunday dinner is the easiest. Promise me Sunday dinner at the very least.â
âPapa DeanâFrankâs boyfriend will nevââ
âFrankâs boyfriends come and go like the wind through foliage. You are a son to me.â Refusing any argument, Dean adds, âFrank can tell his boyfriends what he should have been telling them all along.â Todd looks up quizzically. âThat you are like a brother to him!â Taking a moment to calm down, Dean finds his smile. âSo, Sunday supper?â
Todd smiles, relieved he doesnât have to lose touch with Papa Dean. âThanks, Papa Dean!â
âTry not to let petty, jealous slurs hurt you. Surely you can see the
