Chapter 1
Macy
M acy Bradshaw grimaced backstage as the light caught the deep green sequins of her gown. She felt like a disco ball. Though the floor length dress had built in support, underwear had not been an option. It hugged her body like a second skin and Macy was grateful for the sequins that covered the layer of silk that coolly brushed her nipples. At the very least, she wouldn't be completely on display.
"And, next up to auction is Miss Macy Bradshaw! This spicy redhead will keep you on your toes as she negotiates your real estate contract and argues football with the best of them."
Macy groaned. These charity date auctions were all the rage this year in Dallas, and her friend Susie had finally roped her into doing one. Had she not really believed in the charity, one that benefited local children with cancer, she would have bowed out. Macy turned the corner and stepped on the stage, blinking as the lights momentarily blinded her. Putting her cheerleader smile on, she put a swing in her step and proceeded down the runway.
"Wowza, this stunner will certainly make your ex-girlfriend jealous. Do I see $500?"
As the bidding began, Macy sauntered to the end of the stage. A study in curves, she wore a dress that emphasized a large chest and generous hips with an ass that made finding jeans an issue. Macy thought of her old tap routine and put a bump in her step. Bumpa bump, bumpa bump, bumpa bump. She could only imagine the swing of her ass in this dress. In her late 20's, she had finally come to terms with her body, though she still wasn't the most confident in being on display. Trying not to blush, she worked the stage like a pro.
"This lovely lady used to be the Longhorn's top cheerleader before devastating hearts and retiring into real estate. She loves spicy Mexican food, a good book and long horseback rides. I'm sure we'd all love to see her on the back of a horse." The auctioneer leered at her good-naturedly and she laughed at him. She made a note to kick him in the shins later. She wondered who had written her "bio" for him. She bet it was Susie in her constant quest to hook Macy up.
At 32, Macy was far past the age she should have been married with children, at least in Dallas society. Her mother had all but given up on her. Macy was ready to marry simply for the fact that people would stop trying to set her up.
The bidding rose and Macy turned her back to the crowd. She threw out her hips and posed, looking back over her shoulder, head tilted down, looking out from under heavy lids that framed bright blue eyes and let her smile pucker softly. The bidding rose in frenzy and she almost rolled her eyes. Men were too easy. She worked her way back and froze as she heard a deep male voice say, "$75,000."
The auctioneer went wild. "$75,000! Can anyone top this? Going once, going twice, sold to..." he craned his neck to see in the back. "Number 236! Congratulations and well done, Macy!"
Macy felt the breath whoosh out of her as she stumbled off the stage. $75,000! That was half her yearly commission in real estate. Who was this man? She brushed past the people who offered her congratulations backstage until she found Susie.
"Oh my god Macy! Can you believe it? That is the highest bid on a date auction this year! You'll be in the paper! Can you believe it?" Susie all but squealed as she jumped up and down, clutching a file to her chest, the bounce of her dull brown ponytail punctuating her words.
"Susie. Yes, I know. Oh my god. Who is it? Please tell me who it is!"
"Oh gosh, of course. I'm sorry. Let me see." Susie pushed her glasses down on her nose and scanned the paper list of bidder's. "Lucky Breton. Oh my god, the billionaire oil tycoon. Ohhhhh you are so lucky. Girl, I bet he takes you on the best date," Susie rattled on, imagining all the finest restaurants that he would take her to.
Macy felt dizzy. She knew Lucky Breton. She'd known him when he was Matthew Breton, chess geek and scrawny high school
