door.
âMichael . . .â Mrs. Hailey said, âitâs so nice to
see you again.â
âMrs. Hailey . . . this is Katherine Danziger,â Michael told
her.
âHello,â I said.
âCome in . . . come in . . .â Mrs. Hailey said, looking me
over. âEveryoneâs downstairs . . . Michael, you know the way.â
Could she have said that for my benefit, just to let me know that Michael
had been there before?
It was a big partyâmaybe thirty or forty kidsâand as soon as
the cast arrived everyone surrounded them, offering congratulations. Michael gave Artie
a couple of friendly slugs, then bent down and whispered something to him, and Artie
smiled, nodded and said, âThanks, buddy.â
Elizabethâs father took movies of us for the next halfhour. Artie really hammed it up. Michael kissed Elizabeth on the
side of her face and said, âThat part was made for you . . . you were
great.â And Elizabeth answered, âIâm glad you thought so.â
I walked away with a sinking feeling in my stomach. Sybil was standing in
the corner talking to some boy. I went over to her and said, âI enjoyed the play a
lot . . . you were good.â
Sybil laughed. âThanks, but I know better . . .â She
introduced me to the boy who turned out to be Elizabethâs younger brother. I
wondered if he would make her list.
Erica took me aside, looked in Artieâs direction, and said,
âHeâs flying very high . . . I wouldnât be surprised if
tonightâs the night . . .â
âGood luck,â I said, without enthusiasm.
âOh, here you are.â Michael stood next to me and reached for
my hand.
âHave we met?â I asked, pulling away.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âNothing,â I said. âJust forget it.â I made my way
over to Artie, who was sitting on the couch surrounded by fans. When I got a chance I
said, âI know youâve heard this all night but you were really
sensational.â
âThanks, Kath.â He moved over, making room for me beside
him.
âHowâd you do it? You actually convinced me you were
blind.â
âI donât know . . . it just comes naturally.â
âSeriously, Artie . . .â
âIâm serious. I donât know how I do it. Iâve
always wanted to act . . . ever since I can remember.â
âYou mean for real . . . professionally?â
âYeah . . . itâs tough to get started but Iâm going to
give it a try.â
âI think youâre going to make it.â
âI hope youâre right . . . whereâs my buddy?â
âOver there . . . talking to Erica . . .â
âHey . . .â Artie called, motioning for Michael and Erica to
join us.
This time Michael didnât reach for my hand.
I watched and waited all night for some secret look to pass between
Elizabeth and Michael but as far as I could tell nothing happened and when we finally
got around to talking she was just plain friendly and even said that she remembered me
from New Yearâs Eve, which only made me feel worse.
The party was still going strong when Michael said, âLetâs get
out of here.â
âWhy . . . arenât you having a good time?â I asked.
âNot especially . . . are you?â
I didnât answer. I went upstairs to get my coat and sulked all the
way home. Michael didnât say a word. He didnât even look my way.
When we got to my house I unlocked the front door. âAre you coming
in?â I asked him.
âDo you want me to?â
âIf you want,â I said, like it really
didnât matter.
âItâs up to
