believingâno, wait. You stop dis believingââ
Emmy wasnât paying attention. All at once she was filled with a powerful sense that she could do something for Ana. In fact, her idea would not only make Ana happy, it would also impress Emmyâs parents! She set the bottle on the counter and ran across the room.
âProfessor,â she said, âI have a great idea! Iâd like to have a good-bye party for Ana tomorrow morning. Right here, in the Antique Rat.â
The professor beamed. âThat is a good idea!â
âWhy, I donât thinkââ began Gwenda Squipp.
Emmy held up a hand to interrupt. It was the strangest thing, but she knew she could convince Squippy to agree. âIâll plan it all. And Iâll buy the food and decorations, too.â She could afford it; her parents gave her a generous allowance. She would invite her parents to the party; they would see that she was responsible, and be proud of her.
Gwenda Squipp blinked. âYou seem very sure of yourself, young lady.â
Emmy grinned at her, strangely confident. âBut youâre going to say yes, arenât you?â
âWell ⦠perhaps I should.â
âThen itâs all settled,â said the professor. âWeâll hold it right before you and Ana leave on the train. All right, Emmy?â
Emmy nodded. âBut Ana has to come early. Thatâs part of the fun,â she added quickly. âTwo hours early, at least.â
âWell,â said Gwenda Squipp doubtfully, âI suppose I could arrange my schedule to come with her.â
âOh, you donât need to do that,â said Emmy. âPlease donât bother.â
âBut I have to, dear.â Miss Squipp shook her head. âChildrenâs Home rules. Ana must always be accompanied, at least until she is delivered to her guardians.â
Emmy thought fast. âBut do you have to be in the same room as Ana? I mean, couldnât she be upstairs while you were down here?â
Gwenda Squipp frowned.
âThereâs a good reason,â said Emmy recklessly, filled with the happy knowledge that she would think of a reason. And then all at once, she did.
Emmy whispered in Squippyâs ear.
Gwenda Squipp clasped her hands, sending her bracelets jangling. âHow charming! I wonât ask one more question, not one!â
Â
âWow,â said Joe, as the door closed behind Ana and Squippy, and Brianâs truck roared into life. âIâve never seen you take charge like that before, Emmy.â
âI donât know what came over me,â Emmy admitted. âBut it was like I already believed she was going to say yes! I just sort of told her so.â
âWhat did you whisper to Squippy?â asked Joe.
âI said Ana wanted to make her a very special surprise, and I was going to help, and we didnât want her to see it until it was ready.â
âAna wants to give Squippy a surprise?â said Joe. âWhat?â
âI made that part up,â said Emmy. âI mean, weâll come up with some kind of surprise, but thatâs not why we need the two hours.â She grinned. âIâm going to take Ana to visit Rodent City.â
Brrriinnnngg! Brrriinnnngg!
The professor stepped to the phone. âWhy, yes, Mr. Addison, Emmy is hereâjust one moment.â
Emmy took the receiver. âDad?â
Her father spoke forcefully. Emmy held the phone away from her ear, and Joeâs eyes widened as he listened.
âCome back right now to clean your room, young lady. Youâll have a few more chores, too!â
The droning hum of a dial tone filled the air. Emmy stared at the receiver in her hand.
âSo you werenât sleepwalking,â said Joe slowly.
Emmy put the phone back in its cradle as if it had been made of glass. âSomebody,â she said, âis out to get me.â
