    CHAPTER SIX

When she arrived back at the dig, Annie was still up . She anxiously awaited details of her friend’s date.

    “Did he fuck you?”

Annie was usually forthright, but it was a question she had not expected. At least, not as the first one or as direct.

“Wow, no sugar coating with that question.”

“Stop stalling! What are you, a politician? Did… he… fuck… you?”

In the end, Annie managed to wheedle out every detail of their evening, including details of the size of his cock.

    “Did you see it?”

    “No.”

“How big would you say it was? Ron Jeremy size? John Holmes?”

    “Who are they?”

Sometimes Annie was amazed at how sheltered her friend’s upbringing had been. She had to be satisfied with, “It was big. Very big.”

When Annie finally allowed her to go to sleep, Ria drifted off quickly. She still had a smile on her lips.

By morning, her feeling of happiness had disappeared. She worried that she let a complete stranger touch her intimately. More importantly, she was concerned that she was starting to get involved. When he called at lunchtime to confirm their evening date, she recognized his number. Before answering, she handed her phone to Annie. She told her to tell Jay that she was unavailable to talk.

An hour later, she was cleaning off an artifact with a small, soft brush. She heard a sound behind her. Warily, she started to turn around. She wondered what sort of wild animal she would face. There were coyotes and mountain lions in the area. She’d seen one of the latter the previous week. She was concerned, particularly since none of her fellow workers were nearby.

It wasn’t a mountain lion or even a coyote; however, the creature behind her was just as dangerous. Jay stood there. His stance, a soldier at ease. His eyes unreadable. His face hard. She swallowed and stood stock still. She held the delicate find in her hand like a shield.

“Hi,” she said when it appeared he wasn’t going to initiate the conversation. He didn’t answer. He just came closer. He looked threatening and she backed up a little. “What...what are you doing here?”

He continued to study her. His eyes still hooded and his lips taut. She started to worry. He’d been nice to her so far, but his demeanor didn’t indicate nice was part of his current agenda. Finally, he spoke and said, “Do I look like the kinda guy you brush off with a message through a friend?”

Ria swallowed again. She gripped the artifact in her hand so hard she worried it was going to break.

“I...I’m sorry. I was busy,” she ended lamely. She didn’t know how to lie in the face of his anger.

“And I guess I have nothing better to do than waste my time calling you, huh?”

His tone was as hard as his face. Despite her fear, Ria felt the stirrings of her own irritation.

“I don’t recall promising anything,” she said with asperity. “Look, we hardly know each other. When I had chance to think about it, I was just uncomfortable with what happened last night. I’m not the sort of person who picks up strangers in clubs.”

“Last I checked, I was the one doing the picking up,” he snapped, as though it mattered who started it. “If you don’t want to see me again, at least have the courtesy to tell me to my face. Don’t get your girlfriend to do your dirty work for you.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t want to see you again!” she protested.

“No, you got her to say you were unavailable.” He reiterated the words she told Annie to relay to him. “So, were you going to wait until I showed up here this evening to turn me down?”

He was right in front of her by now. The faint sheen of sweat on his nose and upper lip
