security of her room in Tooting, and the safe, if dull, routine of her daily life. Carlos Rocca had the ability to arouse dark, bizarre longings in her, leaving her afraid of herself.
‘There you are!’ exclaimed Carlos, hurrying down the stairs. Putting an arm gently round her waist, he led her through into a small dining room. ‘You need some toast and coffee before we go and collect your things. I’m sure you must have a headache this morning!’

‘A bit,’ she admitted, which was the understatement of the year.
‘I’m sorry, I forgot that you’d be unused to alcohol. The nuns weren’t secret drinkers, I take it?’
‘Of course not,’ laughed Chloe. She was relieved that he hadn’t mentioned what she’d seen earlier. When he’d looked directly at her, she’d been horrified, wondering how she could face him when they next met. It seemed that she needn’t have worried. Clearly the entire incident was to be ignored.
‘What do you mean, collect my things?’ she asked as she sipped the coffee brought by the housekeeper.
He glanced at her in surprise. ‘Well, as you’re moving in here, I assume you’ll want to fetch your clothes and any belongings you have in that dingy little room.’
Chloe stared at him. ‘I haven’t said that I’m moving in here, have I?’
    ‘No, but I assumed …’
‘I couldn’t possibly impose myself on you and Livia. In any case, I can’t afford to live here. Rooms like the one I slept in last night cost—’
He looked genuinely shocked. ‘I wouldn’t charge you for the room! As I said, I feel partly responsible for the situation you’re in now. In addition, it’s another way I can help your charity, by giving their best worker somewhere close at hand to live.’
‘I had no idea you were such a charitable person,’ said Chloe drily.
He nodded thoughtfully. ‘You’re cynical, and who can blame you? Believe me, I want to do this for you.’
    ‘Why?’ asked Chloe.
‘I think you already know the answer to that,’ he said softly. Then he reached out and stroked the side of her face lightly with the back of his left hand. ‘Come and live withus,’ he urged her. ‘You’re missing the discipline of your old life. Let me show you a different kind of discipline, where the reward is greater pleasure than you can begin to imagine.’
A vision of Livia, naked except for the leather collar, flashed through Chloe’s mind. She looked deep into Carlos Rocca’s eyes, and saw desire there. Desire and something else, something frightening yet at the same time thrilling. The room was heavy with erotic tension, she could hardly breathe, and when she tried to look away from him, she couldn’t.
    ‘I’m afraid,’ she whispered.
He nodded. ‘Of course you are, but you must trust me. Learn to live, Chloe. You’ve been shut away from the world for too long. My ways will suit you. There’s nothing to fear except yourself.’
As he slowly traced the outline of her mouth with one finger, she closed her eyes and gave a tiny sigh of submission. From the moment they first met, this had always been her destiny, and now she felt brave enough to face it.
‘Will you come and stay with me?’ he repeated.
‘Yes,’ murmured Chloe. ‘I want to learn your discipline.’
When she opened her eyes, he smiled at her and his normally impassive face looked younger and kinder for a moment. ‘Good girl,’ he said gently, and then he stood up and left the room.
‘You got what you wanted then,’ said Livia, sipping freshly squeezed orange juice as she stood looking out of the French windows at the back of the house.
    ‘Naturally.’
‘I can’t imagine why you want her so badly. I’d have expected you to prefer someone more sophisticated. Once you’ve taken her virginity, what use will she be to you?’

‘Her virginity is of little interest to me. I see it merely as an obstacle to the real delights that lie ahead.’
Livia’s lip curled. ‘She wanted to be a nun,
