Carlos, and now she’s a charity worker! Your way of life isn’t likely to interest her. She’ll be terrified.’
‘I don’t think so. Our little ex-nun has more to her than you imagine.’
She tapped her fingers restlessly against the glass. ‘I’m bored. I hate England. I hate the climate, I hate the food and I loathe the people. They’re all dull. When are we going back to Rio?’
‘Not for a long time. How is Felipe coming along?’
Livia’s head turned sharply towards her lover. ‘What do you mean?’
Carlos sighed. ‘You should know by now that it’s impossible to keep secrets from me. While I’ve been out, you’ve been amusing yourself by training Felipe. Is he a good pupil?’
The blood drained from Livia’s face. ‘It’s only a game, something to cheer me up when you’re busy. He doesn’t mean anything to me.’
‘If I thought he did, then I would have dismissed him by now. Why not show me what he’s learnt?’
She looked disconcerted. ‘You have to leave soon. I don’t think …’
He laughed softly. ‘I want to see the two of you together. Fetch him upstairs. I shall be waiting for you both in the playroom. That is where you train him, I believe?’
The blonde nodded and then, as Carlos left the room, she licked at her suddenly dry lips before ringing the bell to summon Felipe.
He answered promptly, and stood just inside the doorway smiling politely at her. He was the only member of staff that Carlos had brought with them from Rio, amuscular young man of medium height with straight jet-black hair and eyes as dark as coal.
Livia enjoyed teaching him to please her – it made a change from the relationship between her and Carlos – but she’d never envisaged having Carlos watch them together. Whenever he’d watched her with other men in the past, it had been men he’d chosen, friends or business colleagues. Also, they’d all been in control, just as Carlos always was. It was different with Felipe.
‘I want you upstairs, in the playroom,’ she said abruptly.
Felipe glanced nervously over his shoulder. ‘But Senhor Rocca is still at home.’
She knew that somehow she had to convince him that Carlos wouldn’t know. If he thought for one moment that his employer would be watching, he would never agree. He was besotted with Livia, but afraid of Carlos. ‘He’s just leaving,’ she lied. ‘Hurry, we won’t have very long.’
Still Felipe hesitated, and Livia knew that she had to be firm with him. ‘If I say I want you in the playroom now, then that’s the end of it,’ she said sharply. ‘Come on, I’ll lead the way if you’re nervous.’ She then walked out of the room and up the stairs, and to her relief she heard Felipe following behind her.
Pushing open the door to the room that Carlos called the playroom, she stood to one side to allow Felipe to pass. Then, the moment he’d stepped inside, she slammed the door shut behind him, turning the key in the lock before throwing it to Carlos, who was sitting at the foot of the bed.
Felipe gave a moan of horror. ‘You said that Senhor Rocca was going out!’
Carlos studied the young Brazilian lad with interest. ‘So, you were willing to sleep with my woman if I was out?’
‘It’s what she likes. She … she teaches me many things, some of them bad,’ stammered Felipe.

‘And do you enjoy these bad things?’
Felipe shook his head. ‘No, not at all. I have a girlfriend back home. I am betraying her all the time.’
Carlos smiled. ‘I shall be interested to see exactly how much you don’t enjoy yourself,’ he commented. ‘As for betrayal, I don’t for one moment believe you’ve thought about anyone but yourself during your time with Livia. It doesn’t matter. I’m not angry, simply interested. Livia, please continue. Pretend I’m not here,’ he added helpfully as Felipe made a sound of protest.
‘Take off your clothes, Felipe,’ said Livia. ‘I want to see you naked.’ After a nervous glance
