a few weeks. He drove us to Lost Lake. The
winding road had a hundred and forty-four turns, which lead to the
edge of the wilderness. The campground was situated at thirty-one
hundred feet, nestled within a dormant volcano known as Mt.
Hood.
Dr. Haynes and George were behind us. We
parked in a gravel lot next to newly planted trees. This was where
my adventure had begun all those years ago during a summer camping
trip with Christopher Vandekamp and his father, Doug. I had slept
with the sexy dad, enjoying him in one of the cabins. My friend’s
Leslie and Shelly had been along, as well as Cameron and Darren,
but only the girls had gotten kidnapped. Those first days were
filled with terror and mind-blowing sex. Little did I know that my
journey had only just begun, and that, years later, I would be the
mother of a little Sasquatch and a baby girl. Who would have
thought that I would marry a forest ranger? I had the best of both
worlds: living among the apes, which I had grown to love,
especially Leonard, and visiting my parents several times a
year.
Mike hugged me. “I’m gonna miss you.”
I wore a shiny yellow gold band around my
left ring finger. “I’ll see you soon.”
“I’m gonna work my ass off getting the house
ready.”
“I can’t wait. I want a big fireplace.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He helped secure the infant
carrier to my back. “The boys are waiting by the trees.” He was
referring to the Sasquatches.
“Yeah, I know. We’re probably gonna spend the
night in Maggy’s old cabin.”
“Looks like rain is coming.” Dark clouds had
drifted over the mountain ridge. The lake appeared eerie; the water
was placid and dark. There wasn’t anyone in sight, although an old
Jeep was parked nearby.
George strolled by me, wearing a huge
backpack. “Here we go again. This is why I eat all summer, cause I
know I’ll burn it off in three days.” A faded baseball cap was on
his head. “Can’t wait to see the female anthropoid.”
Mike kissed me. “Hang tough, baby. I’ll catch
ya later.”
I hugged him. “I’ll be fine.”
“You got the new phone, right?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m gonna get everything settled, and then
you and Daisy can spend time at the house. I’m meeting with the
architect this week.”
“You’ll know where we are, cuz you can track
our position.”
“That’s right. I’ll be joining you soon
enough.” He kissed me. “I love you, baby.”
“Love you too.”
He kissed Daisy on the forehead. “Take care,
my girls.”
The scientists had gone on ahead, wandering
around the edge of the lake. I smiled, feeling happy and euphoric.
“I love these woods.”
“They look good on you.”
“See you soon.” I waved to Mike, as I made my
way down the path.
He stood watching until I was out of sight.
Catching up with George and Connor, we walked to the other side of
the lake, taking a small path into the woods. When we were clear of
the cabins, a hulking beast of a Sasquatch stepped in front of
me.
“Leonard!”
“Ggrrrooaarrr…” He grabbed me, holding me
close, but mindful of Daisy. “I missed my Porsche.”
“Who’s here?” I saw Dale. He growled at the
scientists, the hair on top of his head standing on end. “Oh, stop
that. You know George and Connor. Behave yourself.” He grunted in
reply.
“Only Dale,” rasped Leonard. “We see the
tribe tomorrow.”
“You’re looking healthy, Leonard,” said Dr.
Haynes. “How’s the forest been treating you?”
“Good.” He glanced behind us. “Where’s
Mike?”
“He’ll come later,” I said. “He’s got stuff
he’s gotta do.”
Dale had begun walking, not wanting to
participate in idle chitchat. We headed down a path; our
destination was several hours away. Thirty minutes later, rain
began falling, and I had to throw a waterproof poncho over Daisy. I
was soaked and shivering by the time we arrived at Maggy’s cabin.
She had been Leonard’s mother, having passed away several years
ago.
