Chapter Six

I was married three days later at City Hall
with my parents present and Mike’s mom and dad and younger brother.
We celebrated by having brunch at our favorite Italian restaurant.
My mother was slightly disappointed that I didn’t have a big church
affair, but I needed to keep things simple. I didn’t want anyone to
make a big fuss. I wore a lovely white sundress with a garland of
baby’s breath in my hair, while Mike had on a dark gray suit. He
looked so handsome, with freshly shorn hair which had been combed
back. Daisy was baptized a day later at our church, mostly to
appease my grandmother who had insisted upon it.
The two weeks I spent at home were filled
with shopping, doctors’ appointments, and getting my financial
affairs in order. We also had to find a buyer for several gold
nuggets, which Leonard had found in the rivers and streams.
Property had to be purchased, and the house needed to be completed.
We were at a boring meeting with a tax adviser, and I stepped into
the hall to find the restroom.
    “Porsche Delessops?”
I turned to see a tall man wearing a baseball
cap. His expression was eager, yet slightly predatory. “Yes.”
“Hi, I’m Nick Redfern.” He held out a hand. I
shook it somewhat hesitantly, not knowing who the stranger was. “I
host a website about mysterious creatures. I do research on the
strange and unusual. I’m hoping you can help me. Our latest project
is finding evidence that Bigfoot exists. I was wondering if you’d
talk to me.”
Oh, shit! I tried to mask my panic.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I headed
towards the ladies’ room. He followed me, just a step behind.
“Look, I know you know about the
Sasquatches.”
“You must have me confused with someone
else.”
“You’re the woman living with them. You’re in
on it with the government, who’s keeping it a secret.”
I stopped walking to glare at him. “Look,
mister, I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. You’re off
your rocker, buddy. You might wanna cut back on the cough
syrup.”
“You live with them. They’ve taken you into
their tribe. I just want to go with you…to see them. It’s a passion
of mine. A life’s pursuit.”
I dashed into the bathroom. “You’re crazy.
Leave me alone!” I hid for as long as I could. When I emerged, the
stranger had gone, which was a relief. Out in the parking lot, I
scanned the cars, feeling anxious and suspicious. I noticed a tan
colored van parked across the street, and a man wearing a baseball
cap sat in the passenger seat. Oh, great .
“Some guy accosted me in the hallway.”
“What?” Mike held open the door.
“Over there, in that van. That’s him. He
asked about Sasquatches. He knew my name. He said he was Nick
Redfern.”
Alarm registered on his face. “Get in and sit
tight. I’ll be right back.” He ran towards the van, but it suddenly
moved into the street, burning rubber as it raced away. Mike stood
with his hands on his hips, staring after the vehicle. Then he
pressed a few buttons on his cell phone and strolled back towards
our car.
“I got the license plate number. I’m gonna
let Dr. Haynes know about this. There’s a leak somewhere.”
    “Are we in trouble?”
“No.” He drew the seatbelt over his chest.
“There are Bigfoot hunting clubs and stuff. They run around the
woods trying to get evidence. They’re conspiracy theorists and
curiosity seekers. We have to rescue them every season when they
get injured or lost. Morons.”
    “He knew my name.”
    “Yeah, that part bothers me.”
    “Me too.”
I packed several days later, getting ready to
return to the forest. Dr. Haynes and George would be accompanying
me. They were excited to meet Kat. They wanted to outfit her with a
tracking device. Mike would stay and take care of the new house.
I’d see him again in
