opinions. By the terms of the will, I can’t get out of the responsibility of handling her money until she marries or until
she turns thirty, whichever comes first. Knowing Mindy, marriage will definitely come first.“
„That should let you off the hook.“
„Not exactly,“ Chance said with a groan. „I’m supposed to approve of the marriage before I sign over the papers.“
„I think I see the problem.“
„Problems, plural. Mindy is barely twenty years old, and already she’s been madly in love at least a half dozen
times. She’s constantly nagging me about not having control of her own money. Drives me bats.“
Rachel sat down slowly and reached for her coffee cup. „I have a younger sister, too. Having one can be quite a
    responsibility.“
He grinned wryly. „You’re telling me. Mindy is a genuine pain in the neck at times. It’s probably because she was
born late in my parents’ lives and was consequently severely spoiled.“
„But you continue to do your duty by her?“
    „I’m stuck with it.“
Rachel nodded, reluctantly understanding the situation and wishing very much that she did not. Never in a million
years would it have occurred to her that Chance might be in the same situation, having to protect a younger sister, as
she herself was. Rachel found it vastly annoying to discover she had something in common with Abraham Chance. It
was easier to keep one’s enemy at an impersonal distance – safer, too. It was surely very dangerous to start seeing him
    in human terms.
„Who else besides your boss is likely to call and annoy you7“ Rachel asked crisply as she began to clear the table.
„I should be prepared, don’t you think?“
„It’s possible Mindy or Beth might call. More likely you’ll hear from a guy named Braxton.“
    „Who’s he?“
„Some damn-fool free-lance writer. He used to be a newspaper reporter, but now he’s on his own. He claims he
wants to do an article on me.“
Rachel glanced at Chance in surprise. „Why?“
Chance grimaced. „Unfortunately, one of Dixon Security’s happy clients sang the firm’s praises too loudly at a
cocktail party one evening. He mentioned me by name, apparently. Braxton was there and picked up on the idea of
doing an article on the new corporate security business. He says he wants to profile someone in the field, and he’s
    chosen me.“
Rachel’s fingers trembled a little as she picked up a tattered dishrag. „That’s very interesting. You don’t want to be
    profiled?“
„Hell, no. Braxton’s a sleazy pest. I figure if I ignore him long enough he’ll give up and go away. I’ve got better
things to do with my time than feed him a story.“ Chance got to his feet. „So get rid of him if he calls. I’d better go have
a look at that hot water tank.“ He strode toward the door and then paused. „After I deal with the hot water problem I’m
going to be in the old coach house out back. There’s a lot of equipment and tools and assorted junk stored out there. I
’ve got to sort through it and decide what to toss. Holler if you need me.“
„All right. I’m going to have to make a trip into town in a couple of hours. Your cupboards are bare.“
„Get what you need, and I’ll reimburse you. Oh, and Rachel?“
She looked around warily, expecting more orders. „Yes?“
„Breakfast was okay. You make a mean cup of coffee. Mrs. Vinson’s was terrible.“
He went out into the hall, leaving Rachel staring after him. Life was, indeed, getting complicated.
Two HOURS LATER Chance stood in front of the coach house wiping his hands on a dirty rag as he watched
Rachel head for town in her Toyota. He wondered how many professional housekeepers went to work in designer
jeans. Not that she didn’t look very good in them, he thought.
When the Toyota had disappeared from sight, Chance tossed aside the rag and headed for the house. It was time
to make a call and find out if the lady was as
