âThe houses look really hugeâ¦at least what I can see of most of them,â I said.
The properties were so large and there were so many big trees that most of the houses were hidden from the road.
âIâve been following the numbers. It isnât too much farther. You should slow down. It might even be the next house,â Kia said.
My mother slowed down. On the left we were passing a long stone wall. I knew there was a house up there somewhere but it was out of sight. Up ahead there was a driveway.
âCan you see the address?â I asked.
Kia leaned forward and looked through the windshield. âFourâ¦sevenâ¦sixâ¦thatâs it!â
Mom pulled the car into the driveway, stopping in front of a gigantic metal gate. She rolled down her window and pushed a little buttonâ a sort of doorbell. There was a buzzing sound.
âHello,â called out a female voice over an intercom.
âHi, weâre here at the invitation of Jerome. My name isââ
âYouâre Kia and Nick and his mother. I can
see
who you are,â the voice responded. âLook at the camera and wave!â
I looked up. A few feet above the buzzer was a camera, pointed right at us. I gave a weak little wave.
âCome on in,â the voice said. Whoever it was, she sounded friendly.
Slowly the big metal gate opened, and we drove through. The driveway was long and wound its way across a beautiful lawn. The houseâthe big houseâwas up at the top behind a grove of trees.
âWow, quite the place,â Kia said.
âI donât think heâs going to make us sleepon the couch,â I said. âI figure heâs got lots of room.â
We came to a stop at the big, double front doors of the house. As we climbed out of the car the front doors opened. Out came a woman, holding a little toddler, and a teenage girl, holding the hand of another little girl.
âHello,â the woman said. Her voice was soft and she was smiling. âIâm Nikkollette, Jeromeâs wife.â
âPleased to meet you,â my mother said, and they did a sort of ladylike handshake thing.
Nikkollette then shook hands with both Kia and me.
âI feel a little uncomfortable just dropping in on you like this,â my mother said.
âYou shouldnât. Jerome is always inviting people to stay with us. We love the company! Now let me introduce you to our girls.â
âHi, Iâm Sherea,â the teenager said. âAnd these two little angels are my sisters. The baby is Giselle, sheâs three.â
Giselle turned away and sort of snuggled her face into her mother to hide.
âSheâs a bit shy,â Sherea said. âAnd this is Gabby.â
âGabrielle,â the little girl said defiantly. She shook her hand loose from her sister and glared up at her.
Sherea laughed. âYes,
Gabrielle
, and you can see that she has
no
problem expressing herself. Sheâs not shy.â
âIâm not shyâ¦Iâm Gabrielle.â
âPleased to meet you, Gabrielle,â Kia said as she bent to the girlâs eye level.
âPleased to meet you too,â she replied. She was one confident little kid.
âSherea,â Nikkollette said, âhow about if you give everybody a tour while I finish making dinner.â
âSure.â
âHow about if I help you finish making dinner,â my mother suggested.
âThatâs a lovely offer, but youâre our guest, and I just want you to make yourself comfortable.â
âHelping you make supper would make me feel comfortableâ¦and at home.â
âIn that case,â Nikkollette said, âIâd appreciate your help and your company. Weâll get everything ready and then wait for Jerome to arrive.â
âHeâs not here yet?â I asked.
âHe and Johnnie, their father, and of course, Joshua, are driving kids home from the camp. It could
