Gipsyâs ears rang in the sudden silence.
And, the next second, the âmonsterâ vanished as all the fish swam swiftly away in different directions. A few of them hung about in the larder, their little mouths opening and closing. But the rest were already swimming back out to sea as if nothing had ever happened.
âOf course!â yelled Teggs at the top of his voice. But some of the fish gave him a nasty look, so he quickly shut up. âThey werenât after us. They were after whatever was making the noise!â
âI donât get it,â frowned Gipsy.
âYou were right,â he went on. âThe cryptoclidus did disturb something when they built their factories here in the south â those whisperfish! Whisperfish must
hate
noise!â
Gipsy nodded slowly âWell, the glass in that tank was very thick,â she said. âIâll bet it made things ever so quiet in there.â
âAnd once the ship crashed and they escaped, the ocean must have been quiet too,â Teggs went on. âUntil the cryptoclidus started building in whisperfish waters!ââOf course!â cried Gipsy. âEver since then, these whisperfish have been joining together to chew up anything that makes a loud noise â floating factories . . . submarines . . . that silly siren . . . And once theyâve stopped the racket, they split up again.â
âAnd so the âmonsterâ seems to vanish!â Teggs nodded. âThatâs why the whisperfish left us alone in our nice quiet shuttle and the silent diving bell. We werenât disturbing them!â
âWell, now we know whatâs been going on,â said Gipsy. âBut what good does it do us? Weâre almost out of air.â
Teggs nodded. He felt a bit dizzy. âIf weâre not rescued soon . . .â
As he spoke, a massive, dark shape swam up to them through the shattered tank.
âOh no,â groaned Teggs.
It was Mira!
âCoo-eee!â he said, waving a flipper. âIâve been looking everywhere for you two! Now, itâs my turn to hide . . .â he tailed off. âWait a moment. This is my spaceship! What are you doing inside my spaceship?â
âTrying to get out!â cried Gipsy.
But then a bright yellow light shone in at them through the glass.
âDonât tell me itâs
another
monster!â Teggs groaned.
âItâs . . . itâs some kind of super submarine!â gasped Gipsy in surprise.
A gleaming sub was gliding through the water towards them.
Mira spun round to see. Then he scowled. âItâs those flipper-flappers!â he shouted. âThey want to catch us! Well, Iâll show them a thing or two!â
With that, he streaked out of the tank and over to the sub. His jaws were open wide.
Teggs stared in horror. âNo, Mira, donât!â
But as Mira bit down on the nose of the sub â
Zzzzap!
His eyes bulged. Then he stuck out his tongue, closed his eyes and fell quietly to the sea bed.
A hatch opened on top of the sub and Cripes swam out! Gipsy hugged Teggs with relief.
âSo you
did
hear our SOS signal,â smiled Teggs weakly.
Cripes nodded. âArx worked out the best way to reach you, and Iggy drove us here in record time!â He frowned. âUh, youâre looking kind of. . . blue!â
âWeâre nearly out of air,â gasped Teggs.
âI think Iâm going to faint,â croaked Gipsy.
âQuick!â cried Cripes. âInto the sub!â
With the last of their strength, Teggs and Gipsy made it aboard. Cripes shut the doors and led them out of the water. Gipsy wriggled out of her helmet and gulped down air. Teggs just swung his head into the wall and broke the glass helmet like an oversized egg.
âThatâs better!â he whooped. âAnd have
we
got a story to tell you!â
âTell me about it when you have had a rest,â said Cripes
