An Italian Affair
convulse for the second time in an hour as I climax.
For a few seconds he keeps slamming into me, but it’s not long
before he lets out a long, satisfied groan and I feel his body
collapse onto me. We lie there together, spent — and for once, it
feels good. Now we’re both unfaithful. Now it’s even.

    It’s
11am when I wake up. David is still lying asleep next to me, so I
decide not to disturb him. It only takes me a few minutes to shower
and get dressed, and once I’m ready I pad quietly out of the
bedroom into the kitchen. The first thing I do when I’ve shut the
bedroom door is look for Matteo, and I can barely contain my relief
when I see that he’s outside, digging as usual — I really didn’t
think that he would come back after yesterday’s escapade. Now I
almost feel a little guilty for submitting to David.
    I open
the front door and wander across the grass with his cup of coffee.
The dew is refreshingly cold between my toes, and I can feel small
droplets of rain against my bare arms. All I can think about is
last night’s episode of sex on the grass as I tap him on the
shoulder.
    “ Here, have some coffee.”
“ Thanks,” he says, and takes a sip. “I’m almost done. I got
here early again this morning.” He takes another sip, avoiding eye
contact. “I’ll be gone in about an hour, I think.”
“ How much do I owe you?” I ask, my voice shaking slightly. He
shrugs.
“ I’ll send you a bill in the mail or something if that’s
okay.”
“ Certainly.” There’s a long pause before I finally speak
again. “I’m sorry about last night, I don’t know what got into
him.”
“ It’s okay,” he says coolly. “I told you he didn’t like
me.”
“ Yesterday was good. You know, before he…” I trail off, but he
knows what I’m about to say.
“ Yes, it was. Thank you.” A hint of a smile appears on his
face. I hope that’s because he’s reminiscing about it, too. But
it’s gone within seconds. “Anyway, I’d better get back to work.
Most of it’s done, I just need to tidy away a little. I was kind of
hoping to get away before your…husband wakes up,” he
mumbles.
“ Let me know before you go, okay?”
    “ Okay.”
    I notice
that a swarm of large grey clouds have appeared as I walk back
towards the house. I’m tempted to tell Matteo just to leave, that
I’ll take care of the loose ends, but I don’t want him to go yet. I
pour myself another cup of coffee and stand at the window, just so
I can watch him one last time. I’m just about to go out and speak
to him again, to clear things up, when I hear David calling from
the bedroom. His voice is gruff.
“ What’s wrong?” I ask, peering round the door.
“ I have the worst hangover,” he moans. “I’m going to stay in
bed today. Shit, what happened last night?”
    I shrug,
too scared to admit any of it. “I don’t know. I was pretty drunk,
too.”
“ Damn. I hope I didn’t make too much of an ass of
myself.”
“ I’m sure it went fine,” I say with a smile. He can find out later. “Would you like a glass of water?”
    “ Yes. Lots of ice.”
    I obey
his command. When I get back to the bedroom he’s sitting up
slightly, watching me as I walk towards him.
“ I feel horrible, Kelly,” he says, rubbing his eyes with his
fists.
“ I know,” I mumble as reassuringly as I can manage.
“ Will you sit with me for a while?”
“ Uh, I guess,” I say, hesitantly perching myself on the edge
of the bed beside his legs. He looks serious and I’m half expecting
him to say something about Matteo, but he doesn’t. In fact, he
doesn’t say anything at all. I’m not sure how long I sit there for,
but when he eventually falls asleep I take it as a signal to make
my exit.
    When I
get back into the kitchen I look out of the window to see that
Matteo has packed all of his tools already. He’s just sitting on
the grass, looking up at the sky and letting the rain pour onto
