Iâm just not into it. I feel like the world is passing me by and Iâm sitting around waiting to get pregnant.â
âAnd taking care of Cady,â Billie reminded her.
Sherise smiled. âIf it wasnât for her, I would shrivel up and die. But, itâs not just me. Justin seems to have . . . given up. Heâs the one who wanted another baby so bad. Things are just off.â
âIf youâre not going to see a marriage counselor,â Billie said, âyou need to at least see a fertility specialist. Isnât that what Justin wants?â
âIt was what he wanted.â Sherise had been scared to death to go see a specialist. If they found out that Justin was shooting blanks, all hell would break loose. âHe doesnât ask about it so much anymore.â
Billie was about to mention how that wasnât a good sign, but was distracted by Ericaâs laughter. Was this funny to her? She turned to her and noticed that Erica was no longer involved in their conversation. She was texting furiously with a smile on her face.
âWho are you texting?â Sherise asked angrily.
Erica pressed send before looking up. Both Billie and Sherise had an expectant look on their faces. Well, this was as good a time as any. Erica sighed, trying to relax before the expected onslaught.
âI have something to tell you both,â Erica said, zeroing in on Sherise. âAnd I donât want to hear shit from you.â
âYouâll only hear the truth from us,â Billie said. âWhether you think itâs shit or not is up to you.â
Sherise gasped. âYouâve got a new boyfriend?â
âWell . . .â Erica started.
âI knew it.â Sherise was getting excited. âThat smile on your face. Itâs the kind of smile caused by a man.â
âWho is he?â Billie asked, excited.
âDonât get excited yet,â Erica said. âBut Sherise is kind of right. I am seeing someone, but heâs not new.â
Sherise felt a brick in her stomach as she threw her hands in the air. âOh, for Christâs sake!â
The waiter suddenly returned with Ericaâs drink.
Billie took a second before realizing what she was saying. âWait . . . what? Youâre . . . what? Terrell?â
Erica nodded nervously as she grabbed the drink and quickly thanked the waiter before taking a sip. She should have ordered something stronger.
The waiter started, âCan I get you ladies anyââ
âAre you out of your fucking mind?â Sherise asked.
âWhat a surprise,â Erica said. âSherise is judgmental instead of supportive.â
âWait!â Sherise called after the waiter, who had started walking away. âShots. Bring shots.â
âOf what?â he asked. âHow many?â
âJust make them strong and bring three,â she answered.
âI donât want a shot,â Billie said.
âNeither do I,â Erica added.
âTheyâre all for me,â Sherise said. âAs fast as you can, please.â
âLetâs just stay calm,â Billie said to Sherise before turning to Erica. âReally, girl? I thought you were done with him?â
âI was never done with him,â Erica said. âI told you guys that I still loved him.â
âBut you promised you would get over him,â Sherise said. âYou promised to stay away.â
âThat wasnât as easy to do as I thought,â Erica said. âThings have changed and he sort of . . . he slowly worked his way back into my heart.â
Erica was smiling as she spoke, but from the looks on Billieâs and Sheriseâs face, she was alone in this. âOkay, listen. I was cautious, too, but heâs really sorry. We spent a long time talking and working through our issues.â
âA long time?â Billie asked. âWhy are we just now hearing this?â
âWhy?â Sherise
