down.
âArenât you going to introduce me to your friend, Johnny?â Mom asked, smiling at Elizabeth.
âOh snap. Right,â he said. âMom, this is Elizabeth. Elizabeth, this is my mom and this is my best bro, Charlie.â
âYou can call me Claire,â Mom said, shaking Elizabethâs hand.
âYou can call me Mr. Fantastic,â I said. âAnd for the record, Iâm his only brother.â
âWatch out for Charlie,â Johnny said, slapping me on the back. âHe wonât quit.â
âIs Elizabeth involved with the show?â Mom asked.
âNo, Ma. She picked me up.â
âWhat?â
âHe was on the side of the road,â Elizabeth added.
âExcuse me?â Mom asked.
âI drove here, Ma.â
âNot on your motorcycle. You know I hate that thing, Jonathan. Youâre going to kill yourself one of these days.â
âIt was smooth sailing until a couple of crazies ran onto the highway just outside of town. I managed to swerve onto the shoulder, but I blew out my back tire. Wouldâve had to walk the rest of the way if Elizabeth hadnât stopped to give me a lift.â
âWhoa, hold up a minute,â I said, turning to Elizabeth. âYou picked him up on the side of the road? In the dark?â
âSure, bro,â Johnny said. âIt happens.â
âNot in real life it doesnât,â I said. âMaybe on Jaysin Night, Vampyre Hunter , but in real life girls driving alone, at night, donât stop and pick up strangers along the highway.â
âYouâre Jaysin Night?â Elizabeth said, staring up at Johnny. âI canât believe I didnât recognize you.â
âWell, he looks a lot smaller on TV,â I said.
âWhat happened to your motorcycle?â Mom asked.
âRelax, everything is copacetic, Ma. Elizabethâs dad is going to take care of things.â
âMy dad owns the garage in town. Heâs going to have someone pick it up and fix the tire. Johnny can get it tomorrow afternoon â but only if I get an autograph,â she added.
âYou bet,â Johnny said, flashing his Hollywood smile.
âWhatâs your fatherâs name?â Mom asked.
âVictor Opal.â
âI hear heâs building a new resort.â
âRolling Hills is getting popular again,â Elizabeth said.
âI hope so,â Mom said, glancing back at the inn. âIâd love to invite you in, but weâre just finishing up the renovations, and Iâm afraid the cupboards are bare at the moment.â
âThatâs not true,â I said. âWe have a bottle of mustard we could share and a few slices of cold vegetarian pizza.â
âActually, itâs vegan pizza,â Mom said. âLilithâs gone vegan.â
âSheâs gone a lot of other things, too,â I added.
âThatâs all right,â Elizabeth said. âItâs late, and I really need to get going. It was nice meeting you.â
âGive me a call when you get tired of listening to Johnnyâs stories about being awesome.â
âSure, Charlie,â she said, and turned to leave.
Johnny followed her back to her car, which I could now see was a Porsche, although I couldnât quite make out the color in the dark. They said a few things, and then he came back carrying a backpack and his motorcycle helmet.
âI didnât think you were coming until next week,â Mom said.
âShooting wrapped up early,â he said, âand I wanted to surprise you.â
âThatâs sweet, and Iâd love to hear more about your near-death experience, but Iâm exhausted, and weâve got a full day of work ahead of us tomorrow. Weâll catch up in the morning,â Mom said, heading inside.
âYou bet, Ma,â Johnny said. âI could use a little shut-eye.â
âYeah, Iâm feeling a little
