saw him.
I head straight to the bar, not to him. Well, actually, I am heading straight to him, but that’s not something he has to know. I order my customary cosmo and turn like I’m looking around. Our eyes meet and he almost smiles, then turns those dark eyes away.
The cosmo is delivered. Drink in hand, I walk down the bar toward him. When I’m at the stool next to his, I say, “Excuse me, is this seat taken?”
He turns like I’ve shot him and blurts out, “No, it’s not.” And as quickly as the words come out, he spins and walks away.
I stand there, wondering if my breath is horrible or something. But before I have a chance to do or say anything, a body moves up next to me and sits down.
    It’s the Viking.
“Hello there.” He holds out his right hand. “My name is Steffen. And you’re . . .”
“Patricia. Trish.” I take his hand and shake it. Instead of turning it loose, he takes his other hand and puts it on top of mine.
“It’s a pleasure. I’ve haven’t seen you in here. New?”
“Yes. Completely. Untrained.” At that word, I see his eyes light up and his smile deepen.
“Untrained! Well, well, well. Looking for someone to train you?”
“She’s got someone, Steffen,” I hear Dave’s voice say.
“I didn’t realize she was taken,” Steffen says quickly.
“She’s not. If you want to play with her, know that I’ll be asking what you did and how you did it. I don’t want her hurt or scared in any way, understand?” My chest feels warm when I realize that an older, experienced Dom wants to protect me.
“I would never do that. Only what she’s comfortable with.” Steffen turns from Dave back to me. “Would you like to play?”
Dave told me about negotiating. “Depends on what that entails.” I’m starting to feel a little frisky.
“How about I just concentrate on doing something that would please you but would be a little challenging for you? How does that sound?” I like his smile. It’s just warm enough with an edge of danger, and I find it thrilling.
“That sounds pretty good.” I throw a glance at Dave to see what his reaction is, and he smiles and nods. This Steffen guy must be okay.
“We’ll take the alcove on the right. It’s not in use.” He tries to lead me to it, but I sit back on my heels.
“In front of everybody?” There’s panic blooming in my stomach.
“Yes. In front of everybody.” He stops and looks into my face. “One of the most important things the Dom tries to propagate in his sub is trust. Do you trust me? Have I done anything that would make you distrust me?”
There’s no retort for that. “No, I don’t guess you have.”
“Then trust me to make this a positive experience?”
I nod. “Okay. I’ll try.” My voice is shaky, but I’m feeling resolved and I want to do a good job as a first-time sub. When we’re out of earshot of Dave, I lean up to Steffen and whisper, “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course. Anything. If it’s too personal, I’ll tell you.” He’s getting ready to perform some kind of sexual act on me in front of a group of people and there’s something too personal for him to share with me?
“No. Nothing like that. It’s just . . . what does ‘sub’ mean?”
I was pretty sure he’d laugh at me, but that’s not what he did. He pulled me to a sofa instead, spread out another towel, and patted it with his hand for me to sit. “I’m a Dom – a Dominant. That’s the character trait with which I most identify. It’s in my nature to be dominating, but with that comes the responsibility to care for my sub in a way that will allow her, or him, to love and trust me, to look to me to have his or her needs met.” I nod.
“I call you a submissive. There’s something in your nature that responds to a strong, capable Dominant. You know that for your sexual fulfillment to be complete, you need to submit to someone who can and will fulfill your every sexual fantasy. You will trust that
